Is Hope is a Jar by philosophy right for me?
I have been hearing so much about hope in a jar for quite a while now and wanted to try it but ..............I will be celebrating my 45 birthday in a couple days and I promise myself I am going to start using it as a night cream. My question is I have oily skin is it right for me and do I have to use anything else from the philosophy line to get the full benefit of hope in a jar? I have sensitive, combination skin and this is the perfect night-time moisturizer for me. It's just the right amount of nourishment, without adding any oil to my t-zone. It strikes a good balance of fighting aging/wrinkles, without being too heavy or clogging my pores.

I'm 43, and since puberty I've had VERY oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin (like I could solve the country's oil dependence) and now add aging to the mix. AHA 's usually burn my skin. This stuff has been simply amazing for me and I've tried everything (even Philosophy's "congested skin" products). Since using this, my oil production is more balanced, no burns, no breakouts. I use 2x a day but at night I use with a natural zinc product to fight acne and for the first time in my life I have no zits. Everybody's skin is different but I would do a HIAJ infomercial.

I have T-zone oiliness and this product works for me. I am 40 and it has improved my complexion, and made my skin more radiant. I also use Philosophy Purity cleanser with it - highly recommended.

PLEASE whatever you do...do a patch test. I had such a bad allergic reaction to this product that I'm on prescription antihistamines and have taken 4 days off work. My face is red, blistered, itchy and swollen.

I can't personally recommend it. It didn't work well for me - and I also have oily/combo skin and just turned 42. It didn't absorb into my skin well, which made it a NO for day wear under makeup...and it broke my skin out a bit, which also made it a NO for me for night use. Many people do love the product, but it just didn't work for me.

Even if you're concerned about oil, I think this would be a great moisturizer for you at night - I slather during the summers at night and my face feels baby soft and looks so smooth the next morning - start with that and then go to daytime usage. When I feel like my skin is a little oily and I'll switch to Hope in a Bottle. They do also say that sometimes oily skin is the product of poorly-moisturized skin, so it might help control the oil after a couple weeks of usage

I have combo skin and it was too heavy for me in my oily areas. It didn't really absorb into my skin and felt cakey. I didn't like it at all. But you might have a different experience.

Philosophy has their own website that has a customer service 800 number. You can call them and they can certainly help you choose the right products for your skin type. I've done it and they were very helpful.

I am 21 and I also have oily skin plus I still have breakouts but hope in a Jar did not make my face any more oily then it already was. But if you are aging well which I have heard people with oily skin do then no why spend 45 dollars on a product you don't need.

I don't think you need to use other Philosophy things to get the results. I don't, but I do use other quality products. As far as oily goes, you may need to try it at night first. But there is a smaller size, they have the 0.5oz size. I bought that one first to see if I'd like it.

I am 39, and have combination skin. I don't find that hope in a jar makes me oilier in my oily areas. It kind of evens everything out. and I never feel or look shiny with it on.

I have oily skin and I didn't have any problems with it adding more oil to my skin. As, this product truly does have a lightweight consistency to it. However, this product has a displeasant scent to it, that lead to me stopping my usage of this product. Honestly, if it weren't for its dipleasant scent I actually would have kept on using it!
So, if you do buy it know that it is good for moisturizing and giving a renewed glow to the skin only. As, it isn't really an anti-wrinkle/anti-aging product in my opinion. And, it does have a noticeable smell as well.

For a night cream I would recommend "When Hope Is not Enough". It is fairly light, not oily, smells really good, as I though this particular version had an undesirable odor about it. The When Hope Is Not Enough is used it leaves me with a very slight cooling very silky texture without oil & a heavy feeling night cream.

I would say get some Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Cream. I have oily skin and use it every night. It leaves my skin feeling so silky and matte and my skin looks so refreshed every morning. Plus, you get a lot more for your money!

My skin varies from oily to combination, depending on the season. My skin is sensitive with mild rosacea. Hope in a Jar works for my skin type. It feels very light but it provides just the right amount of protection for my skin. There are no added fragrances but it does have a light scent that I like. It's a great all purpose moisturizer that has improved my skin. I have fewer break-outs, smaller pores, and more radiant skin. I highly reccommend this product. There is hope in this jar.

I have dry skin in the winter as well! This does the job quite well. However, if it doesn't the next one down would be Dear John by Benefit. That moisturizer is THICK.

I have the worst combination skin, with flaky cheeks and oily t-zone, that gets 100% worse in the winter. I love this moisturizer, it's gentle but keeps your skin from drying out all day. Use it in the am when your skin is still damp from the shower.

I have normal skin, but it gets really dry when the weather starts turning cold. When the seasons would change, I would always go through a phase lasting a few weeks where my skin would peel around my mouth. This is the only moisturizer that helped my skin stay normal through the winter.

If you have very dry skin, I'd try the Dry-Sensitive version. They also have a product called When Hope is Not Enough Replenishing Cream. It's very moisturizing. You could use it at night, or with your daily moisturizer.

It is good, but not if you have dry skin, and in winter especially it might not be enough. Try the one for "dry sensitive skin" - I find that it works better.

I have pretty dry skin in the winter too and I don't think this is an effective moisturizer during that time. I wear Lancome during the winter. It's a lot more moisturizing. I usually wear hope in a jar when my skin doesn't need much moisture.

What about sunscreen?
I really want to try hope in a jar, but am leery about using a moisturizer that doesn't have a high spf in it (at least 20). I'm of Irish/Welsh descent, so am as fair as they come, and protecting my skin is very important to me. I also have reverse combination skin, with a drier t-zone and oilier cheeks, and occasional breakouts. Where do you fit sunscreen into your routine with using this moisturizer, and does it ever get to feel to heavy using multiple products? Thanks for the input!

Highly recommend to use a separate SPF cream. i don't like face creams containing SPF for many reasons. 1. usually the spf is low 2.usually comes in a sticky texture and makes your face sticky/shiny 3.spf ingredients do not react well with the rest of the vital ingredients in moisturizers. However when you use two separate products, you can easily achieve 1.high SPF choice 2.non-sticky texture 3.no ingredient interference. I recommend Amore Pacific Natural Protector SPF30 or Clinique City Block SPF

I found the SPF content in Hope in a Jar +SPF to be quite low so I just purchase the jar without the SPF, and use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily sunblock SPF 70. I'm obsessed with having fair ageless skin, and this sunblock is perfect, its made for wearing under makeup, I can't even tell or feel its there. For only $12, I highly recommend looking into it.

This summer they released Hope in a Jar with SPF 20, so you could always try that product if you were concerned. Also, it's a pretty light texture, so I don't feel like it feels heavy on the skin. There's different types of sunscreens (chemical and physical), so depending on the type, it would be used over or under your moisturizer.

for someone with skin as fair as your i would recomendd usin this moisturizer with the Clinique super city sun block it has an spf of 44 but is super light i have fair skin and acne but i use this every day and it doesnt break me out plus both of these products are super light so it wont feel cakey i also saw a new hope in a jar with spf 20 mixed in i havnt tried it but that may wirk to

This made me break out at first, i had small bumps on my face. I think its because my face wash also has an exfoliate. So i used the face wash less and didn't break out from the cream anymore.

I would not think you would have a problem with this moisuritzer as I find it to be one of the most gentle ones I have tried. I have had problems in the past with others & this is great very soothing & light. My niece has to be very careful of products she uses & she can use this with no problems. You should try it.

Personally, I have never had problems with this moisturizer. I have been, unfortunately, plagued with acne from time to time, and my skincare products have changed from the Philosophy On a Clear Day products (on which I didn't fare too well either), to Murad products (still not really good), to prescription products, and to Proactive; even through all of these, I've always used Hope in a Jar without any problems. Since I've used it with all these products, I can definitively say (at least for me) that this was NOT the product that caused me to break out. I now use Proactive and my skin is clear, but I still use this product religiously without incident.

I used the face wash too and had the same product. Don't let that keep you from Hope in a Jar. It is really amazing stuff and did not cause me to break out at all. And take it from me, I break out at the drop of a hat. My skin is super sensitive and it has taken years for me to find products that work. This and DDF ultra lite moisturizer are the two that work the best for me and I have spent thousands of dollars over my lifetime. I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you give it a chance. I would try hope in a jar maybe on your wrist before you put it on your face. If it makes you break-out sephora is great and will let you return it. It's worth a try b/c it's the best lotion ever!

Probably not. It's 99% oil-free. That being the case, everyone's skin is different, and some are more sensitive than others. They have a completely oil-free moisturizer called Hope in a Bottle.

I don't think so. I am a teenager and am prone to breakouts, and I've never had any problems! I have very sensitive skin as well. I feel very comfortable using it on a daily basis, but for me, whenever I'm not sure about a product, gradually bring it into your daily routine. I wouldn't use it every single day to start off, because it might overwhelm you skin. Use a little bit, and if you like the results, continue to use a little more each day or every other day. Also, if you can, head into a Sephora store and see if you can get a sample or try out the product. I hope that helps!

I can't speak for you as your skin is different than mine, but this product has made my skin clearer and more radiant. After applying this product my skin feels refreshed and breathable, and my skin is softer and clearer than it has been with any other product. I would highly recommend. It has been worth every dollar I have spent on this product. I hope it works just as well for you!

Does this product cause your skin to turn red if you have really sensitive skin?
I have really dry, sensitive skin and I want something to help me with acne, moisturizing, and the redness that sometimes flares across my face. I was wondering if this product was a good moisturizer because my skin is always really dry, and when I wear make up it really shows. It's embarrassing and all my firends point it out to me. I use a creme right now that is supposed to help with the redness in my skin, but it's beginning to take longer and longer to help. Is there anything you would suggest to help me with the redness, too?

no it does not irritate. i bought this because my cousin has very sensitive and easily irritated skin and it works great for her. i'm an esthetician and i do my own extractions and my nose area gets really sensitive and has flakey skin afterwards so that's why i bought this moisturizer. i've been using it for almost a month and it's been great. no more dry flakey skin on my face after extractions!

I don't have super sensitive skin, but I did have a lot of blotchy redness in my cheeks cause by dryness and a condition that causes my pores to be clogged with dead skin cells. I was also skeptical of this product at first, but I noticed a difference after only one day--absolutely no joke. Its been three weeks since I first started using it, and my skin is smoother, tighter, my pores are smaller, and my skin tone is more even and not red.

I received a jar yesterday in the mail (July in Louisiana = very hot) and there were no problems with it at all. It was delivered to me at my office, not left on my doorstep. I don't know if that would make a difference.

I don't know but this product made me break out after only using it twice, so be warned if you are breakout-prone. I hadn't had ANY breakouts in over a year until I tried this product. I'm not sure how it will react with your other cream, however. Sorry

I agree with the other 2 answers. But, as with all skin care products, they should be allowed about 15 minutes to absorb before appying ANYTHING to get reach maximum benefits of the product. :-) I wear it everyday under makeup and at bed time.

I wear this moisturizer under make up, but I do think a little goes a long way and if you use too much accidently, I would give it a minute to fully absorb.

Sure. Give it a few minutes to settle in, though, before you apply your makeup, or perhaps apply Hope in first, wash your hands well (it's irritating to the eyes), do your eye makeup, then apply the rest of your makeup. Honestly, after a few weeks, you probably won't feel the need to wear much makeup anyway. This really is an excellent product.

I believe this was developed for people who had just undergone clinical procedures on their face. I use the top strength Retin A and have extremely sensitive skin and it doesn't bother mine. Try a small test area first.

It probably would depend on what you're exfoliating with. philosophy's exfoilaiting products are gentle enough that I've used them on my sensitive skin, followed by the hope in a jar, and it's been fine for me. Anything that's very course or that leaves your skin with that noticeable sting, you probably want to give it a chance to calm down first.

Yes, you can use this after exfoliation. It is soothing enough.. The exfoliation effects in this product are minimal and non irritating. I frequently use it after using an exfoliater. Hope this helps :)
