Question
Is there an ingredient that is a common allergin in this lip gloss?
I purchased a Super Shimmer Lip Gloss 2 weeks ago and one day awoke to swollen lips, that I believe was caused by the lip gloss. Is there an ingredient in this lip gloss that is known to cause swelling and irritation. (and yes, I am sure I didn't buy the lip plumping gloss). Thanks!

I had a similar issue with allergic reaction to the Birthday pack, and threw them out. I had been using a full sized one for a while, and went to get a new one to replace the one that was almost out. That was Sat., and today I am sitting with swollen and irritated lips again. I am sure they are going to be a flaky peely mess by this weekend. I wonder if they changed formulas. The old one never caused me issues.

I had a similar reaction after receiving the birthday 3-pack sampler in November 2009. It took several weeks before the reaction began, therefore I thought the product was simply old and I threw out what was left. Last week I ordered a full size version of one of these lip glosses, and after wearing it only once, I now have the same allergic reaction (swollen lips, itchy around the outside of my lips, which I'm sure will then turn to dry flaky lips just like last time). And, if memory serves, t takes a LONG time for the allergic reaction to clear up (even with medicated Blistex). How can this product not be recalled when so many people have had allergic reactions?! It was on the news (CBS) in April! I love Sephora, but I am not happy with this product and the fact that it is still being sold when it's harmful to many. I will no longer consider purchasing Sephora-brand products again.

I also received the free birthday gift 3 pack and started using the product sporadically since last September. I did notice my lips getting dry, but I did not associate it with the product. However, about 6 weeks ago I started waking up with very swollen lips that would itch and burn. Once the swelling would go down(after taking Zyrtec) my lips would be dry and very cracked for days. I stopped wearing all lipsticks and lipglosses based on my dermatologists advice. Yesterday, I put it on again since I hadn't had an allergic reaction for a week and the same thing happened. I googled allergic reaction to Sephora lip gloss and read all these comments. I will never buy or use a Sephora brand lipgloss. It's a shame that they did not contact consumers who received this free gift. How were we to know that there were possible allergins in this unless we checked out the website?

I've never been allergic to any cosmetic products. I received the free birthday set around the same time I returned home for Christmas break. I ALWAYS have some sort of lip product on my lip. I noticed a couple of days after being home, my lips were just so chapped nothing was helping. I didn't associate it with the Sephora lip gloss, and instead thought it was the weather. I bought medicated everything and went through tubes of chapstick. It wasn't until I returned to Chicago a few weeks later that my lips cleared up a bit. Then, last week, I was given a full size tube as a gift. Although hesitant to apply anything other than the lip therapy I had relied on for the last few months, I put on the Sephora gloss. It's a great color, texture, etc, but by the time I got home from work, my lips were burning and itching and the next morning had returned to the dry painful peeling state. I have been looking online for possible causes of my condition and then I realized that the only thing that had changed in my routine was the Sephora gloss. I always use the same brands, and this was the only thing that was new. After reading all of these reviews, I'm certain the gloss has caused my reactions, too.

This stuff is HORRIBLE! I got the free birthday pack in July and used occasionally. In October, my lips started getting dry and chapped and continually getting more dry and more chapped. One day woke up to severel swollen lips but had no idea why. This stuff caused my lips to swell multiple times, swelling lasted about a day, along with burning, itching, later severe chapping, peeling, cracking that lasted at least a week. Felt like I had burned my lips. Until I realized it was this gloss causing the problem, I had gone thru several cycles like this. Took several months for my lips to get back to normal after finally realizing the culprit and throwing these away! Completely turned me off to ANY and all Sephora brand products. If they don't care enough about their consumers to regulate what's in their products, then I will not patronize them.

I got the birthday freebie set and also had an allergic reaction to it...in fact in woke me up in the middle of the night because my lips were so puffy and swollen. Now, I've actually had reactions like this before and my allergist figured out that it was coconut oil, so I can't use a lot of the natural lip balm products (like Burt's Bees). I'm the weirdo who does better with synthetic junk like petroleum & stuff, LOL. But I looked up the ingredients for these and they don't seem to have coconut oil so I'm not sure what's causing it in my case. Maybe the cinnamon-derived stuff that other posters have mentioned. Luckily I still had the prescription hydrocortisone cream my doctor had given me for just such emergencies - after I used that, the swelling went down in a few hours, but my lips are still parched and uncomfortable. So sad to do it but I guess these are going in the trash. :-(

I am so relieved to read all the above answers. I have woken up in the morning with severe lip swelling & tingling a couple times in the past month & could not figure out what the culprit was. I also have experienced dryness, blisters, & pain once the swelling subsides & it takes a long time for my lips to recover. The weird thing is that I have been using this lip gloss since June & just started developing this allergy about a month ago.

Yikes......I got the birthday offer for the free glosses-but I didn't get them. I didn't trust it to begin with-since the offer//description mentioned nothing about it being organic or natural. If it's the sephora brand--then it has some common toxic ingredients. 100% pure and jane iredale have glosses that are really truly natural-and safe.

Now I understand why my lips kept getting drier and drier as I used this lip gloss. Obviously there is something in the product that causes an allergic reaction in many users. Thankfully, my lips didn't get too swollen, but they feel so uncomfortable that even using a natural moisturizer doesn't help now. They tingle all the time and are so dry. Hopefully this will stop soon now that I've thrown away the gloss.

I am never allergic to ANYTHING ever! But I was VERY allergic to this. A few months ago, I went out to with my husband to a fancy dinner where we both got dressed up (a rare occurrence for me). The next day my lips were blown up swollen. In the days that followed, my lips got dried out, cracked and peeled. They were red and raw and it took over one very painful and uncomfortable week until they healed. Also, looked really unsightly. Well, yesterday, I grabbed a purse to go to a gallery opening and this gloss was in it (I had used the night my husband and I went out to dinner). Needless to say, I woke up this morning and my lips are huge and swollen. I know what comes next and am dreading it. And i have a job interview in a few days! I am so angry that Sephora is still selling this product and does not seem to officially addressed this problem at all!

I am releived to see I am not the only one to awake one morning with lips like Angelina on Botox! I have never had an allergic reaction to any lip products and it took me a visit to the allergist to confirm my suspicions. The big question is the ingredients. I got the 3 mini pack as a birthday gift from Sephora as an Insider member. Used the Precious Pink and Bronzed Beauty on and off for a few weeks until this reaction occured. I have been told CARMINE, a coloring agent used in this product is the culprit. I need to confirm this with my allergist, but the tubes do not display ingredients. All I want is to prevent this from happening again. It is painful and uncomfortable!!

Oh my God, I'm so happy to be reading these posts. I'm having the same reaction. I have a tingling, then numbing sensation in my lips that follows with eventual burning and itching. They swell and eventually flake off. Awesome. Because I wasn't using this lip gloss more than once every now and then I did not sort out the culprit until now. I'm writing Sephora. This is ridiculous.

I've been comparing this product to the VS Beauty Rush lip gloss to try and narrow down the most likely allergen. There are other glosses I can wear, but can't find the ingredients lists online. These items are in both the BSLG and Beauty Rush:

-polybutene
-ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (maybe, listed as hydroxyhydrocinnamate)
-sodium saccharin
-calcium aluminum borosilicate
-silica
-titanium dioxide

So that leaves the following that may be our problem: helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, tridecyl trimellitate, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, phenyl trimethicone, fragrance (parfum), polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, water (aqua), tocotrienol, tocopherol, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, phenoxyethanol, red 6 (ci 15850).

When I first started using the Bronzed Beauty gloss, I thought I had bought a plumping gloss. I felt like my lips were tingling and they felt like they were swelling to the point of explosion, however I do still use the product and the reaction hasn't been the same after plenty of uses. The ingredients are printed on the tube, so you could compare the ingredients of Bronzed Beauty and one that doesn't swell your lips. If you find that there is an ingredient that doesn't match, it could be the culprit! Then maybe you could ask your doctor to test if you are in fact allergic to the ingredient. Hope that helps!

I just got the sample Bronzed Beauty. I put on and thought wow tingly. I wasn't expecting that and then my lips just felt like they were inflating and inflating. I noticed fragrance is high on ingredient list. maybe the "fragrance" ingredient hides the possible allergen for some. I got more plumping then any plumping lip gloss has ever gave me in a almost painful way. i hope they investigate. I love how they donate to breast cancer.

I had a similar reaction to the Bronzed Beauty and Precious Pink. I woke up in the morning with very swollen, red lips. After a day, the swelling went down and just a reddish, orange ring remained like lip liner, very unattractive! They eventually got very dried out and peeled. I have been using every type of gloss out there for over 20 years....this was definitely caused from these glosses!

The Bronzed Beauty sample which came in the birthday set also causes my lips to swell to an absurd size (worse than Angelina) and causes burning, blisters and peeling once the swelling subsides. I do not have this problem with the other two colors in the pack- but this IS a concern. People SHOULD be aware that this is obiviously a common POSSIBLE allergy and if anyone has an inkling as to what the different ingredient is between that specific color and the other two from the pack it would be greatly appreciated.

Question
BEWARE!!!!! This "lip gloss" is destroying my girl's lips!!! Why do girls still by this??
The ingredients in this "lip gloss" clearly have something wrong/dangerous/illegal in them. Yes, my girl is too suffering from the same issue of bursting and scabbing lips as the majority of the questioning girls on this product. Sephora needs to be sued and threatened to be put out of business. They know they have released a TOXIC PRODUCT and their whole "$1 for Breast Cancer" BS is there to make you feel OK about buying this. Like in some way you can trust them for doing a good deed ... it's just a cloaking device for consumers to get the impression that they care. NEWSFLASH: They don't care. They only want to make money from you in the worst way possible. Not for the spirit of business, but for the evil of greed. They've intentionally put an inferior ingredient in their product and have chosen to keep it on the market. Again, if you doubt any of this, then why would the majority of people who have surfaced to post on this site exclaimed about their "blown up lips" scabbing up. It doesn't mention anything like that in the "what it does" section does it?

Just because some people are really allergic to an ingridient doesn't mean it's toxic.

Stop using the product. Just like if you have an allergic reation to medicine--stop using it! It's really not that difficult. I'm sorry she's suffering but you shouldn't demand it be taken off the market because of a bad reaction. That's like saying peanut butter should be taken off the market because some people have bad reactions to it.

We all now know that some people have allergic reactions to Hexyl Cinnamal, Cinnamal, Benzyl Benzoate, and Lemonene, so you can stop complaining because it's your fault you didn't look in the ingredients and see the common allergens or test it on your hands! Seriously, you need to stop saying that it is all sephora's fault. I have had no problems with it and obviously a lot of other people think it's fabulous, so it isn't toxic. I'm sorry to sound critical, and I hope that your little girl gets well soon.

I also received the birthday pack and have had my lips swell up and blister 3 times not knowing that the gloss was the cause. It's a delayed reaction so I was thinking it was a food allergy or something and not from some lip gloss I put on the day or two before. This last time I had not used any lip products other than vaseline for months until one night I was going out and my lips were better so I thought I would put on some gloss ... the next day my lips started again. It's been 2 1/2 weeks & they're still not better. Been to my PCP twice and a dermatologist. Had a steroid injection, took oral steroids, antibiotics and have been using topical ointment from the dermatologist. I buy department and drug store cosmetics and I've never had a similar problem with any other product. I actually used this product the last time thinking it would be a higher quality and safer than my drugstore glosses.

em311, the problem does not happen right away It took me a few weeks of use before I noticed that my lips were itching and swelling and at that point I was not sure what caused the reaction. I stopped using all makeup procducts, did not use eat or drink anything I had not before and after about a month I grabbed one of the lip gloss one morning and with in minutes of that use I had a severe allergic reation again. I do like Sephora, but this product should not be given out as a free bithday gift. Everything else I have purchased I have enjoyed. Keep doing what your Dr. ordered. If you are not happy than get a second opinion from another one. Have an allergy test done so you can find out just exactly what you are allergic to & then read the labels to avoid this in the future. Sephora/UD cannot be held responsible unless they went against Government manufacturing/ingredients mandates. But still, all people are different & you could be allergic to or have an adverse reaction to those ingrediants deemed "safe" and/or "natural" and sometimes an allergy could develop that you never had before (that's why boxes of hairdye instruct you to perform a patch test EVERY time.) I'm very sorry to hear about your adverse reaction & hope you are doing better. Try & be patient because these things do go away & make sure you only use new, unopened, uncontaminated products that were bought from the REAL vendor, no ebay, etc. If I were you I'd be sure to use a sunblock or avoid sun exposure of any kind to the affected area. Ask your Dr. what kind he recommends (but remember, you could have an adverse reaction to prescriptions too) or wear protective clothing like wide brimmed hats or scraves until thee area has had time to heal & not be so aggravated.

I'm Hispanic with a medium complexion and brown hair/eyes. I bought Desert Gold, and I love it so far. Its a tan color with pink and gold shimmer, which on me goes good with almost any look. If I have really dramatic eye makeup on I just use it over a nude lipstick and it's perfect, or if I have light makeup on for the day it looks great by itself. It doesn't have a ton of color to it when it goes on, but it's just enough to so that it's obvious it wasn't a clear lipgloss, if that makes sense.

Question
Plumping?
When I put this on, I noticed that it had a slight numbing sensation. Does it have some kind of plumping ingredient? It's not an intense numbness, and I doubt I'm having an allergic reaction, because I've never had a reaction to any beauty product I've EVER used.

I also had the same reaction -- some report a severe allergic reaction, but for me it was just a slight tingling and some numbness that caused some plumping. I was surprised to realize that not everyone experienced this!

No, it's not a lip plumper, it's just an average lip gloss.

I think you're talking about the Fresh Gloss. It's quite small and a sheer pink with a minty feeling. I believe it was around $7. But yeah, sounds like Sephora brand Fresh Gloss.
PS- If that's not the product you're looking for, try it anyway. It's fabulous!

Question
How much color does this have?
I am looking for an affordable lip gloss to wear out like at clubs. I guess at stores people get confused. I want a lip gloss that has a lot of color and is really shiny. Is this it?? Or can someone recommend another brand because I don't understand why lip gloss colors are nothing like in the tube. I keep wasting so much money. :(

Try NARS lipglosses... they're definitely more expensive, but in my experience they look the same on your lips as they do in the tube. I use this Sephora lipgloss for everyday wear but when I go out at night, I definitely reach for the NARS when I want the most color :)

(That's not to say this Sephora lipgloss won't look great at night too, it would look awesome, but in your case I don't think I would recommend it if you're looking for a super shiny yet color packed lip gloss)

I tried the Ballerina Pink and it was very sheer, almost no color but very glossy.

I love this product, but there is not a ton of color- it's more smooth and shiny on the lips, not very bright.
