Question
How long does a bottle last?
3.38 oz. doesn't seem like very much, for a product that covers the entire body.

I got a good 4 applications out of it. It's a small bottle but when you think about the cost of an airbrush tan..this stuff is worth the money. I can't say enough good things about it.

Question
Safe for face?
Is this safe to use on your face, or is there another product I should use for that? I'm pretty new to self tanners and not sure about it. Thanks!

I've always applied the product all over, including the face (although lighter to keep it natural). Never had any skin reaction on either oily or more drier areas (I have combo skin).

I use this on my face and apply it with the mit. It looks weird..like your face is dirty or something but when you wash it off the next morning it looks natural and then my make-up evens it out to perfection.

I use it on my face every time. Have never had an issue, and I have fairly sensitive skin.

Question
Pre-Exfoliation?
Ordered this an the mitt however, there was no mention of pre-exfoliation but in the documentation that came with the product it mentions using "The Body Polish" and "The Body Mist" for better results. Apparently Sephora does not carry these two items and looks like they may only be available in the UK according to Vita Liberata's website. So, my question is, is it necessary to exfoliate prior to using this product and if so, what should I use that Sephora offers? Most reviews do not mention anything about exfoliation.

As always, exfoliation should definitely be done prior to applying a self tanning product. If not, dry skin patches will absorb a lot of it and you will get dark brown stains that are not pretty. You can use whatever product you want for this step, but keep in mind that some of them contain oils (ex.: mango oil). You should avoid these as the layer of oil will limit the contact of the product with your skin. Simply exfoliate and put a greasy cream over normal problem areas such as hands, feet, elbows and knees.

As an avid self tanner, I always recommend exfoliating before tanning and even a couple days after to make sure your tan wears off evenly. I have used several different products, including St. Ives facewash, and loofahs.

My current favorite is the Ole Henrickson Rub N Buff Salt Scrub. It smells good and moisturizes all in one.

You definately need to use exfoliant when you use this product. I have used Sephora's exfoliator, which is fabulous. St. Ives has a cheap drug store option if you are in a pinch. Prefer Sephora's exfoliant as the granules are fine and fabulous light scent.

Get the intense, I am pale and use the darker version.

I would only get intense if you have a fairly dark complexion. I m nearly transparent and the sheer gets me DARK. Not Jersey Shore dark, but at least 3 shades. My sister who tans regularly can use the intense, it's almost too dark for her too though....

Question
What is the difference in color options?
I have very fair skin, and my legs are ghostly white- which is where I will be applying the tanner. I'm debating on the Sheer vs Intense color. Does the intense color get super dark with one application? I basically want to take the "glare" off my crazy white legs. :)

Don't get the intense if you are super light skinned. I am nearly transparent as well, and the sheer puts a really nice brown tan on me.

I'm as white as paper but I put on the medium at first. When the bronzer part washed off in the shower it was too light for my liking so I used the dark. The color it leaves behind after a shower is very nice and not too dark.

Question
Is this a dye?
Hi,

Some other tanners activate the melanin in your skin so that you turn the color you would when tanning. I am getting the impression that instead, this is a dye. Is that correct?

Actually, most self tanners use what is called DHA (dihydroacetone), which is a product that reacts with amino acids contained in keratin. The top layer of your skin thus reacts to DHA and what we observe is the "Maillard reaction". The combination of amino acids and sugars produces melanoidins, brown molecules ressembling their cousin melanin.

DHA-based products are then "real tanners" and not just dyes.
