Ordered this an the mitt however, there was no mention of pre-exfoliation but in the documentation that came with the product it mentions using "The Body Polish" and "The Body Mist" for better results. Apparently Sephora does not carry these two items and looks like they may only be available in the UK according to Vita Liberata's website. So, my question is, is it necessary to exfoliate prior to using this product and if so, what should I use that Sephora offers? Most reviews do not mention anything about exfoliation.

As always, exfoliation should definitely be done prior to applying a self tanning product. If not, dry skin patches will absorb a lot of it and you will get dark brown stains that are not pretty. You can use whatever product you want for this step, but keep in mind that some of them contain oils (ex.: mango oil). You should avoid these as the layer of oil will limit the contact of the product with your skin. Simply exfoliate and put a greasy cream over normal problem areas such as hands, feet, elbows and knees.

As an avid self tanner, I always recommend exfoliating before tanning and even a couple days after to make sure your tan wears off evenly. I have used several different products, including St. Ives facewash, and loofahs.
My current favorite is the Ole Henrickson Rub N Buff Salt Scrub. It smells good and moisturizes all in one.

You definately need to use exfoliant when you use this product. I have used Sephora's exfoliator, which is fabulous. St. Ives has a cheap drug store option if you are in a pinch. Prefer Sephora's exfoliant as the granules are fine and fabulous light scent.
