Questions & Answers for Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask

Question
Amount to use overnight
Hi, I just bought this and am very excited to use it. However, I'm just wondering how much to apply overnight. It's not as thick as many masks, so I'm wondering if I should apply the same amount as I would a cream (and rub it in?), or have a thicker layer as I would a regular mask (which seems a little odd to sleep in, but I'm not sure). Thank you!

Personally, I only use a thin layer when sleeping in it overnight. It is recommended to put a few thin layers on your skin. However if you feel more comfortable just having a thin layer over your skin while sleeping, I think it will work just fine. xx

That's a great question, and maybe you could experiment with what works for you. I use a thin layer where I think my pimples might pop up (jaw line and parts of my forehead) and a thicker glob on an active pimple. The thing is, if you apply a lot you'll burn through product and likely waste some on your sheets if you're sleeping in it (like I do), but if you're using it during the day, you could probably heap a little more on your problem area. If it works by drawing our impurities it needs to have direct contact with an area, so if you have a thick swath, I don't know if that is even beneficial, for any product for that matter.

I feel like it wouldn't be a huge deal to wear it every night. But I would recommend using it as a spot treatment rather then covering your whole face if you were to wear it every night. I would say no more then 2-3 nights a week on your whole face, your skin needs air! But if you have the odd breakout, I think its perfectly okay to put a dab of this cream on the spot until it goes away. xx

I think you should only use it every day when your skin is particularly troublesome, otherwise, you should use it once or twice a week depending on how bad your breakout is.

I do. If I have a pimple, I'll put a visible dab of the sulfur mask on it and for my acne-prone areas, I put on a thin layer (it sinks in so I can't see it) each night and then sleep with it. In the morning I don't wash my face with water, but I use a cleansing wipe (Ponds with the little exfoliating beads) and that works for me.

My skin is super sensitive! Sometimes when I use face masks my face gets red and starts burning, exactly like a sunburn. I wear this mask overnight and it has never irritated my skin, and that means a lot coming from me. If you are looking for a mask for sensitive skin, you should definitely try this one out. xx

Roth warns you not to leave theirs on longer than 10 minutes, whereas Gross can be left on for hours or overnight. Sounds as if even though PTR is more highly rated, Gross may be more gentle, i.e. more appropriate for sensitive skin. Something you can leave on for hours is definitely going to do more to clear redness and blemishes than something you wash off after 10 min. so I would lean toward this one ;)

Question
Compatibility w/exfoliation products
I use an exfoliating treatment at night. Could I use both or would that be too much? If I used both, how long after I apply the exfoliating treatment could I apply this mask? (I alternate btw Bliss Peeling Groovy & the Incredi-peel)

I've used it in conjunction with Philosophy retinol products and I don't think there is a problem with layering. Evening routine: shower and use clarisonic w/ enzymatic cleanser, tea tree toner, retinol pad (but I admit, I don't use every night), acne treatment with B vitamins, eye cream, moisturizer (retinol or not), sulfur mask where I need it only. I would think you might want it to be your last step? It is a little drying, so if I put it on last I can control where it goes.

Question
Is the Retinol in this product effective?
I have used both sulfur and Retin-A Micro, and they both are miracles for my hormonal acne breakouts and cystic acne. Is this retinol in the product good enough to increase my skin cell turnover?
