Questions & Answers for SEPHORA by OPI gelshine™ At-Home Gel Colour System

Question
DOES IT HELP TO GROW NAILS LONGER?
My nails have always been, and always will be, thin, tear and split. Quit wearing acrylic nails years ago. Will the gel nails protect nails from splitting and peeling so I can grow them longer? Thanks of your help!

Both my Mom and I have HORRIBLY weak nails--if they get just a little bit past the nail bed, they break off. However, we've both been using this for about 1.5 months and our nails are long and healthy with no breakage whatsoever. Also, what's so amazing about this to me is that my nails are in even worse shape than normal because I had my acrylic taken off about two months ago, so they're obviously really thin and weakened. The polish stays for at least two weeks (I take it off around then because my nails grow quickly and I don't like seeing the unpolished part!), and like I said, no breakage whatsoever. I highly suggest this!

Question
Full hand?
What I really want to know is
A. Can your whole hand fit in the light at once (no doing thumbs separately)
B. Is this compatiable with Gellish or Shellac Polishes?

I used gelish sparkle top - izzy wizzy - over the gelshine polish I received with my system on my pedi and it cured the same as OPI. On my mani instead of gelshine I used OPI gelcolor (with gelshine base and top) and it also turned out great.

Not sure, may depend on the color. I heard that Gelish was compatible so I ran out and bought a hot-pink one. It never set and I ended up with sticky nails that I had to soak to remove. (Waste of about 2 hours).

Yes, you can use these with other gel polishes--both salon and at-home.

The Sephora employee who did my nails had me put the thumbs in separately. I don't think my entire hand would've fit in there. For the record, I have small hands.

The reason why they say to do the thumb separate is because when you lay it in there on it's side, only half of your thumb nail cures and you end up with half of a goopy nail. It is smarter in the long run - you don't waste any polish and time.

Question
Nail condition after removing gel color?
I've had Axxium and Shellac done at salons before & while I loved the color and how my nails looked good for 2 weeks, when I went to remove the product, both left me with paper thin nails. Is there a way to remove the OPI gelshine without completely destroying my nails? I'd love to try it, but don't want to go through the process of waiting to grow my nails out after every use! Thanks.

My nails tend to be on the dry peely side. I had shellac from my local salon or about 6 months. When I had them taken off my nails were thin, dry, and peeling. I believe this was because of two things: the drying out of my nails from soaking in acetone so long and often, and the nail tech scraping off the polish. Even my nail tech said when they do their own nails they give themselves a week long break in between every few manicures to let their nails return to their normal state, and apply lots of cuticle oil and creams.
I'm doing the same thing with gelshine, I'm only doing two manicures in a row and then giving my nails a break while applying loads of cuticle oil to moisturize.
I don't think gelshine would necessarily have the same drying effect on everyone, it just depends on your body chemistry and nails, but because I know mine tend to dry out I'm taking extra precautions.

I was curious as well. I bought the system last week, put on the coral color (I'm wired) and couldn't wait to remove to find out how easy it was before I added more colors to my collection. I put the opi nail remover wraps on my nails soaked with remover and after 15 mins removed. I was surprised that when I unwrapped the nail the polish just flipped up, pretty much in one piece. I really didn't need to use the cuticle pusher to scrape it off, it just popped off. My nails were fine, no damage. Seemed a little stained from the color, but using the buffing block lightly that came off. Applied cuticle oil and was good to go. I've had two shellac manicures at the salon and on the second trip the nail tech said my nails were thinning, I believe that was because they would on wrap my nails for 5 mins then scrape/sand off the polish. Seemed a little much. Very happy with the easy removal on this product and hope I don't see thinning again.

They don't damage your nail if you remove them correctly. If you don't follow the directions for removal then you will end up with paper thin nails. Also, I like to take a week with no Gel after about 2 months because at about 2 months, the gel starts to chip off much faster.

Keep the product away from your cuticles & you should be fine, especially if you add the cuticle oil that comes with the kit (or any one for that matter!). I have had no issues with this one despite tending towards dry cuticles.

I haven't experienced any dryness. I have had gel polishes (OPI Axxium, Gelish and OPI GelColor) from salons before and what I have noticed is that if you dont take a break after every 3-4 manicures then the gel will chip faster. I am assuming this is the same with this product. But I have not experienced the dryness, and after about a week without the gels on my nails are ready to go again!

There is a cuticle moisturizing oil that is included, but you can also use any other kind. I put some moisturizing product on my cuticles every night, and I have not noticed any drying compared to a regular manicure.

Question
Is it not necessary to use a "dehydrator" with this system?
In many gel systems, I believe you use a dehydrator such as "pH bond" prior to applying the base coat. Is this not necessary for this system, because I don't see it included. Thanks!

YES! They dehydrator is going to help remove any residue or oils from the nail bed to insure the polish will adhere correctly. You can just use regular strength nail polish remover and give them a good wipe. Before you polish make sure there are no cotton pieces left on the nail.

I have to say, I have started using a dehydrator instead of buffing nail surface and it works very well! The polish lasts longer with no wearing at nail tips., much better than buffing. I've also tried no buffing, no dehydrator and that did not work, a lot of wear at tips. I keep gel polish on, because it prevents my nail from breaking and I don't want to thin my nails from all the buffing.

No it isn't necessary. When I've had my gel manicure
At a salon, they've never used a dehydrator. So it's not
Necessary.

Question
It seems a lot of people have complained that there are not a lot of GelShine Nail Colors to choose from...even online...
Does anyone know what GelShine nail Colors ARE AVAILABLE...besides "RED?"...(I assume that IS one of the available colors)...
I cannot seem to find them online here. Anybody?...Thanks.

I really would like to buy this kit (right now), but color choices are somewhat important to me as I DO NOT want to be stuck wearing the same color all the time...right?

Yes, very few colors of gelshine so far, but you can also use OPI gelcolor found elsewhere. I just used it and it worked fine. Gelish seems to work as well.

I believe you get approximately 20 manicures if you use 3 coats each time. I only use 2 so I can get more out. May not seem like a lot for the money, but if you think about the fact that each manicure lasts 2+ weeks, each bottle will give you 40+ weeks of manicures. That's almost an entire year of consistent use!

Well it comes with a bottle of the base coat, top coat, and you get a free gelshine color, so whenever you run out of those, you can just get new ones.

Question
sticky after curing?
The polish felt sticky after curing the base coat, color, and final coat. It only felt dry after using the cleaning spray. Is that expected or does that mean I was putting on too thick or coat or doing something else wrong?

You are missing the last step! You need to spray your nails down with the small bottle of isopropyl alcohol. It seems like an unnecessary step but your nails will be tacky until you wipe them with the alcohol that's included.

Yes, but after the topcoat is cured, you need to use the nail cleanser to wipe them down and remove the residual stickiness.

Your nails are going to be tacky, even after curing, until you use the nail cleanser as the last step. The cleanser removes the tackiness after they're cured, and then they should be smooth and dry.
