Questions & Answers for Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

Question
Is this foundation oil free? I have sensitive/acne prone skin. This product seems great for covering blemishes, but will it contribute to them?

I have sensitive skin and have no problems with this foundation. It never causes breakout for me either. It will definitely cover acne. I don't need to use a separate concealer when I use this. Sometimes I use this as a concealer for certain areas when I am using my drugstore foundation (I like to save this foundation for special occasions since it is always sold out).

This product is oil free and would work great for sensitive/acne prone skin types. I would recommend getting color matched at your local Sephora store before you purchase though. This foundation is highly pigmented and the shades can vary quite drastically.

I've tried tons of high end powders and was settled on the MUFE powder, but I recently tried the cheap Rimmel Stay Matte powder and it works even better.

NEW SHADES
there are several new shades, such as L45, L49, M53, etc. But there are no descriptions, does anyone know what they are? (undertones etc.) or how they compare to the original shades?

Well, Light 49 is a perfect match to me and it has a Beige/Peach tone to it. My undertone is light to medium and neutral leaning warm. Some of Kat's shades have a yellow or pink tone to them.Light 46 is very pink. Light 49 is not yellow or pink but a very noticeable peach.

M53 is my perfect match. I have yellow undertones. I was using 52 & 54 and mixing them. So glad 53 came out. I gave the 52 to my daughter, she's light with neutral undertones. I'm not sure about the other shades you listed. Hope this helps.

They range so dramatically so the best bet is to have a color consultation if you can. The store associate said I was a Light 42 but then when I started trying them on I ended up being a Medium 54!! The L's are more for light porcelain skin tones but again range from warm, neutral, yellow... definitely check out in person.

Take a look at the underside of your wrists. Are they more yellow or pink? If they look to be a mixture of the two shades chances are you're a neutral. I'd recommend giving us a call at 1-877-SEPHORA so that one of our beauty experts can assist you in getting perfectly matched :).

The very best way to get the proper shade is to go to a Sephora and have that computer scan your skin for 'your' shade - its spot on!

Absolutely! This product can be used on tattoos, we'd recommend using it with a translucent powder on top to help the pigment set.

Yes, I have used it to cover a tattoo and it does fairly well, but you may be better off going with the concealer version.

While the "Tattoo coverage" is certainly achieveable with this foundation, I feel like with this line it is more of a gimmick to prove its amazing coverage (it really is a great coverage foundation) and less to seriously cover tattoos. Cream style concealers are much better for that as the formula is more opaque, especially ones specially formulated to cover scars and tattoos, like Cover FX or Dermablend. Make sure to powder well afterward, pressing the powder in. If you need multiple layers to cover, cover, then powder, then cover and powder again. Tap the product on with your finger for the best coverage, you can use a brush or dampened sponge to blend/feather the edges if needed but your finger is the best tool for covering the actual tattoo.

Question
Is this proven to be waterproof?
I have a tattoo that not many people know about and I will be in a swimsuit for the majority of a week with family. Would this foundation work in a pool setting? Not fully submerged all day, but definitely the possibility of getting wet. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I just got caught in a TERRIBLE, torrential rain storm for 20 minutes, if not longer. [No umbrella!] It was basically like having the most powerful shower of your life.
When i got home this foundation looked ABSOLUTELY just as pristine as when I had applied it.
Seriously, this foundation is incredible for it's long-wear ability.

Have you tried the Concealer? You may want to use both for extra coverage. I haven't tried this over my tattoo, but it does cover scars well and blemishes well. I would suggest a liner, a concealer, and possibly the foundation. I also do oil cleansing for makeup which is the best way I have found to remove makeup. I have to Oil cleanse deeply twice to remove this. I haven't "tested" the water proof, but I always get my face wet first when I cleanse. It doesn't move from a splash of water. It will move if I splash it with water and then rub it around on my face with my finger tips, but it doesn't really come off with out a cleansing process. It will wear down eventually like everything does. I have worn this for 12 hours misted my face several times throughout the day with a hydrating spray of two parts water one part glycerine several times and the foundation didn't move. I hope this helps.

my usual makeup remover didn't remove it, so I would say it's completely waterproof....I had to wash twice, the washcloth didn't finish the job. You need a good makeup remover for this.

A flat top foundation brush. I apply this with the Cover FX one available on Sephora.com and the finish is very airbrushed. I have also used by beauty blender sponge which works well with this product too, I just hate how much product my beauty blender absorbs and worry about wasting this foundation that way.

I really like to use a stapling brush or the BeautyBlender Sponge. Remember that if you use the brush use it in small circular motions and if you prefer the sponge use it damp.

I ordered the Light 18 in Kat's concealer, and that shade was great. So, I ordered the Light 44 in the foundation, since the description of the shade was the same as the description for the concealer, but the foundation was way, way too light. So, be careful with that. As fair as I am, I would still have to order one of the medium shades in the foundation, and I am never a medium shade in anything else.

I have pretty deep smile lines and I always use a primer. I don't have any issues with this foundation accentuating anything. I use a makeup remover wipe to remove everything and it comes off like any other foundation I've used. I follow with my cleanser and my Clarisonic. Even though this foundation is long wearing, I find that it removes easily with decent cleansing products.

I have had no problem with settling in lines. I remove it with any good creamy cleanser. Soap and water with work, but cream remover works best.

I alway, alway, always use a primer, primer will help any makeup not settle into lines (as much) also I always use a setting powder to make my makeup stay in place all day. I never use a foundation just by itself. When I was using a sample of this foundation I had no problems with it moving or settling into any lines even around my eyes.

However, when I had this tested on my face for color matching, the consultant only put primer on one side of my face and didn't put primer on the other, just so I could see how this foundation lasted on both sides of my face. It was at the end of the day so I only wore it for four hours, but usually any foundation I have used before would move into my lines a little. Both sides looked exactly the same after four hours and didn't settle into my smile lines at all.

For removing, I do oil cleansing. Google search it if you don't know about the process. I have to oil cleanse twice with this. I would imagine with a normal foaming cleanser you would have to clean twice as well. I hope this information helps.

The color spectrum for dark skinned women - **Online** - seems very good. If you are cappuccino, you would be like me, 66 or 68. I say that because 66 and 70 are sold at my local Sephora and I need to mix them to make the right shade. I have not actually seen the 68 or the 72. It does seem that the company has been inclusive of women with deeper complexions. The 66 is a bit golden/neutral and the 70 is very reddish (but it's great for contouring). I have used my samples for a couple of days and love the texture. It looks amazing, all day long.

Hi, the color specialist at the Sephora I visited is also a woman of color. She happened to mention that she wanted to use this product herself, but was unable to do so because none of the shades were a match for her. She said that the company was really interested in getting feedback so she was going to let them know. Hopefully they listen to all of you and make darker shades.
