Hi, this is like a regular pencil that requires a sharpener.
But I highly suggest that for these types of gel like formula pencils...that you buy a sharpener that is extremely sharp and of higher quality than a drugstore brand sharpener. I used to waste alot of these softer/gel like pencils with my drugstore sharpeners, until I finally broke down and bought Urban Decays GrindHouse 24/7 sharpener. Yes, its a bit more but the blades are extremely sharp and made in Germany. I now can get a fine point with only 2-3 smooth full turns and of course save money because I now get many many more uses out of them.
Hope this helps

Question
Is my 11 AM eyeliner to soft to sharpen?
I bought the Big and Bright liner in charcoal, unfortunatly it was very soft and it broke. Bare Minerals replased it with the new Round the Clock, which goes on very thick. has anyone tried to sharpen theirs to a point?

it's also very soft, easy to sharpen but quickly flattens after one application because of how soft it is. You'll go through it quickly if you like a point and need to keep sharpening.

I have been able to successfully sharpen mine to a point. However because the liner is so soft it becomes somewhat dull again immediately after application. I like this eyeliner so it is worth it to me to be continuously sharpening it, even though it is a bit cumbersome.

I have tried to sharpen it, and it didn't go well. The liner is too soft to hold a point :( It doesn't sharpen smoothly.

I sharpened it with an eyeliner pencil and the tip obviously gets thinner but works fine.

I have been able to sharpen it to a point but it gets blunt quickly. Try keeping it cool first like in the refrigerator.

Question
Retractable, or must be sharpened?
I'm always dismayed that eyeliners aren't listed by type. I have never purchased a "must be sharpened " eyeliner I found acceptable and find it frustrating when I can't access retractable only liners.

This product is only a sharpener, however, my Big & Bright eyeliners from BE always were breaking. This one hasn't broken at all!

This pencil has to be sharpened.
I understand your frustration about the "must be sharpened liners"
But about 2 years ago, I figured out that these "softer gel like formula" liners need to be sharpened with very very sharp blades.
So I did some research and found out that Urban Decays is the best for these soft liners. So I broke down and bought one...I was so shocked!
Who knew that sharpeners could be so darn different! The blades on it are so sharp that pencils literally glide through it and it only takes 2 full twists to get a nice finer point. I now can finally get the full liner to use up! Yay! :)
(Also,NYX has a sharpener and it is a good dupe for the Urban Decay)
Hope this helps a lil' bit

You need to use a sharpener for this eyeliner. And make sure that after you sharpen it, you put the cap on very tightly. This will insure that it won't dry out and keeps it going on smooth for every application.

You have to sharpen it with a pencil sharpener. Beware- it is very hard to sharpen. I wasted allot of it trying to sharpen it. I returned the product.
