It's a bit tricky. Twist from OPEN position to CLOSED (you will hear a click) - and then just keep twisting, and the top will screw off easily

Remember that the upper part with the brush POPS off, but the shaker top of the refillable lower part SCREWS off. .

I would say the bristles are synthetic and they are nice and firm. Perfect for stipling.

Question
I'm a little puzzled about how this works
I was very excited about this purchase but am now a little confused. First, the open and close seem backwards. When I turn it to close, it is open -- the 4 holes are open -- and when I turn it to open, the 4 little holes are closed. Second, when the holes are open, it appears that insufficient powder comes out. Do I need to tap it so that more powder comes out? Should I shake it before opening. I think this product has great potential but right now, not so much so.

It doesn't come out from the brush, you dispense the powder from a sifter onto brush and then apply.

answer 2
The brush does not have a powder container. The powder all sits in the clear compartment and the powder comes out through four little holes that are open and close-able. It's easiest to open the holes while the container is still in one piece, shake the powder onto the brush, close the holes, open the container, then twist up the brush and use. It can also be used to shake the powder onto the brush. Dipping the brush into the powder itself isn't possible.

it's 4" tall by 1 1/2" round. The bottle is glass so you want to be cautious when carrying it in your purse. I like the fact that it is glass because I know I can sanitize it.
