This Hourglass product is a treatment + product, hence the name primer serum. As I have said in a past post I love this because it is truly a multitasking product & this way I fell like I'm getting more bang for the buck. When you add in the fact that this is infused with skin loving ingredients such as: Essential oils of Ylang Ylang, Jojoba, lavender, geranium & rose (to name a few) In addition to vitamins: A, B5, C an E it is truly a gentle product and therefore as it is so concentrated I do use it sparingly around the orbital (under eye) area with great results. As an MUA it is my intention to buy one bottle for me and one for my kit. If used correctly ( sparingly) I can, no doubt, see this lasting, at least 9 months. So, yes, I am all for under eye use and I also use an eye cream as well. Again just in love with this product.

I use it in my eye area. actually that is the exact reason I bought it. I have fine lines around my eyes and I was looking for something to smooth out the skin so the foundation did not get in the lines. This works really well for that.

Oil does not cause breakouts. If you have oily skin, it will just make your skin oilier. Their other primer may be a better choice if you do have oily skin. I have dry, sensitive skin, and I did not have an issue with this product.

I have not broken out from this primer, just as I haven't broken out from any of Hourglass' products. A client I know with troubled skin received this product from sephora.com when it was available as a sample recently and loved it.
The way it absorbs into the skin is unbelievable. It smooths on and leaves NO oily residue.

I have very reactive skin and this hasn't caused any problems so far. I'm about 21/2 weeks in and normally if something is going to break me out it happens at about a week to a week and a half. It feels very oily going on, but it absorbs almost instantly after being rubbed in. Ill be honest, the oily feel freaked me out the 1st time but it finishes perfectly. Its NOT matte but it isn't oily either. My skin is combo (used to be very oily) and this is fine. If your skin is really oily I would visit Sephora in person and get a sample.

Not all oil is bad for you. I believe oil from animal sources tend to clog pores and cause breakouts but the oil based on certain plant sources shouldn't do those things and actually have beneficial properties. However, people have different reactions to different things so it's difficult to say for certain you won't break out.

Question
Does this product work on combination skin?
My skin tends to be oily in some areas and really dry and flaky in others. I have used the regular primer with the foundation and have found this makeup line to work wonders with my skin, and was just wondering if this would be better or should I continue with the regular primer.
Thanks!

YES! (at least for me it does) I have the same problem with my skin and this product has made a world of difference for me. I use it everyday. I actually use it first and then apply the other hourglass primer on top of it because I feel like that one helps even out skin tone more than this one (which is clear). I would definitely recommend trying this to anyone with combination skin.

I think if you are looking for overall use on your face, then the primer would be substantial. However I feel it might not be enough, if you have dry patches that can be stubborn, I know I do. If they do, I highly recommend the serum them. You wouldnt need a lot, just a dab for your dry areas on top of the primer just to give your makeup a good canvas to work on. I would consider getting the "Best of" kit with samples of both - or, they have a mini version thats a little bigger than the size of a chapstick - for a really good price too - just to try it out on its own. Either way I think you will find the solution youre looking for, both are exceptional products.

You don't have to use any product on your entire face - makeup doesn't have to be applied as a mask. :) Just use the serum primer in the areas where you experience dryness and then lightly blend toward the rest of your face but not on the spots that get oily. :)

Yes, this will totally do the trick--however, it is a little thick (it has a lot of essential oils), and if you can't tolerate a tinted moisturizer, this may also feel too heavy on your skin. You might want to look into a regular ol' moisturizer that has radiance in it--like the NUDE Radiant Day Moisturizer--that can give you a dewy glow without being too heavy.

Absolutely! I don't use foundation either, and I find this evens out my skin tones just perfectly. Keep in mind, a little goes a long way. So invest in the small size first (which should last you at least a couple months, if not longer) and see how you like it. It feels like it would go on sort of heavy, but in fact, it gets absorbed very quickly. It's just lovely!

I put it on after my moisturizer so it can bind with my foundation and work as a primer. I still receive all the benefits of using it as a serum, my skin starts to glow and clear up after only a week or two of using it in this order.

:) So I emailed Hourglass yesterday & they said:
If Nº 28 is being applied prior to makeup as a primer, it should be applied after your moisturizer.
If it is worn as a nighttime treatment, we recommend the serum be applied before the moisturizer.

Question
How is ths different from other Hourglass primers?
The Hourglass mineral veil primer wea recommended to me by a sephora associate several years ago. I loved the fact that it had mineral sunscreen so I did not have to worry if my foundation offered sun protection or not. How does this product compare to the product that has been a Sephora favorite for years? Why does it non include sun protection? Are all the plant oils in the ingredients going to be irritating to my sensitve skin, because the mineral veil primer is totally worry free. The only reason I am even considering trying the new product is that my skin has gotten drier over the years, and this product seems to be targeted at those with very dry skin. Is this the case?

This product is designed with drier skin types in mind, or someone looking for anti-aging properties. While the Mineral Veil Primer has skincare properties in it, this one actually toes the line between skincare and makeup. It's more of an anti-aging, hydrating serum with primer properties. I assume it doesn't have sunscreen in it because it can be worn as a serum at night. You can also pair this with the Mineral Veil if you still want your sunscreen (Just put the Veil on top of the No 28). I have sensitive skin and it doesn't cause me any irritation, but if you're concerned, you can always do a test patch on the side of your face by your ear (where it's easy to hide any unexpected results).

I am in the same spot you are, love the Veil Mineral Primer! But am getting drier! I use the No28 as a serum at night, and during the day, but I still use the Veil Mineral Primer as my SPF.
You need to at least try this as a serum for night-time to start.

Try this! My skin seems similar to yours and I too have used the Mineral Veil in the past. This one glides on and feels very much like a serum where as the MV has a 'lotion' feel to it. It feels quite oily going on the skin but its quickly absorbed and leaves a SLIGHT dewy finish. I would say the MV gets totally absorbed into my skin compared to this one which leaves a hint of 'glide' behind. Its hard to explain, but I do really like it!

When I asked a similar question on their fb page, this is the answer I got. "the two primers are both suitable for all skin types. They have different properties – No. 28 doubles as a treatment and a primer, so it nourishes, protects and transforms the skin. Veil offers SPF 15, eliminates redness, reduces pore size, and softens fine lines. Both prepare the skin for a flawless makeup application." The natural oils should be fine, but I can't say for certain you wouldn't have a reaction cause I'm sure people have reactions to different things. SPF in veil wasn't significant enough anyways so I personally don't mind this doesn't have spf. I believe spf 35 or higher is recommended. I'm a bit skepticat about this product as well so hoping to get sample before I buy.

Sunscreen should be the *last* skincare item you apply... and then your makeup. Primer is considered a makeup product so it goes *after* the sunscreen.

My concern about this is that oil is used to remove sunscreen as it breaks down the ingredients to get them off your skin and out of your pores. Wouldn't using this extremely oil-heavy primer over sunscreen make it less effective since you're breaking down the sunscreen with the application of the oil?

I apply before sunscreen and let it absorb a few moments. The general rule is to layer products from most lightweight to the heaviest, so serum usually should be applied before moisturizer or sunscreen. Good luck--I myself really like this product!

Before, just be sure to let your sunscreen meld into your skin. I like to mix my sunscreen with my daily moisturizer and apply the mix to my face, neck, and ears (because my hair usually gets put up during the day). Then I apply this serum and let it set for a few minutes before starting up my make up routine.
It is a really great product especially if you have dry skin.

I can't speak for Hourglass, but I don't think they expect this product to be used alone, but rather to be layered under moisturizer/sunscreen/makeup, which generally do contain sunscreen. This product will give your skin a smoother surface for applying those other products. I do like this product for that purpose.

Most people have a moisturizer with spf, so you can use this product as a base under your regular moisturizer. If your moisturizer doesnt have spf, then you can use the hourglass primer which has spf 15 and works good also. I bought the combo kit with both. I use the serum at nite and primer in the day.

You can view this product as a skin care-serum, and use it at night time, either alone or with other products. Because of it absorb-ability it can be used before or after moisturizer. I use it at night as a serum and during the day as a serum, but I love the Veil Mineral Primer so much I still use that around my eyes (just a bit, for the SPF and to hold my shadows on all day) .

according to the answer I got on hourglass's facebook page, this product is designed as treatment/primer. So I'm sure you can use it alone at night. I have a suspicion this is precisely why this product does not contain SPF. (Not that SPF harms you if you use it at night, but extra ingredient that doesn't help tends to hinder the effect of other active ingredients so best not to have SPF in night/treatment products)

Just fyi, here is the answer I got from hourglass concerning this primer:
"No. 28 doubles as a treatment and a primer, so it nourishes, protects and transforms the skin."
