It looks pretty natural on and probably slightly more coverage than a standard tinted moisturizer that can be applied with finger tips. Any stronger coverage I would classify this as a foundation and applied with a brush. Plus, it has strong SPF that isn't typical of any makeup product.

It looks great and very natural if you have smooth skin. I have some dry patches and acne on my cheeks, and this stuff caked around those areas. I included a photo; it looks much more obvious in real life though. It helps a little if you moisturize well beforehand and use a primer over any flaky skin, but it still emphasizes flakes on me.

Also, it looks much much better with indoor incandescent lighting than in daylight. It's currently overcast but bright where I am, and it looks very obvious on those dry patches.

As far as coverage, it provides sheer coverage similar to a tinted moisturizer.

TRY THIS>>>exactly how I felt....it gives buildable coverage but you have to wait about two minutes between applications...never looks like a mask or cakey....I glow, look hydrated, not oily...I added more for more coverage after first application...perfect. I still need concealer under my eyes. no powder....and i am oily in t zone.

It is not cakey at all, i tried HD foundation (it's bad for me). IT provides good coverage, very blend-able. It almost as good as the temptu I've got. It feels like I am not wearing anything, very natural looking (well i usually try to not make my face look fake) yet provides good coverage for my red areas and acne apots. ^___^ Love it !

I had the same question - I'm a redhead with very fair, cool-pink porcelain skin. The closest match in the store was the Fair (the lightest) but they all looked pretty neutral in tone to me which usually will not work with my cool skin so I took a sample to try. This did NOT work for me; the tiniest amount made me sallow. If you really like Smashbox and are fair-skinned, then you can use Fair and color-correct with powder or foundation. I'd recommend going to a Sephora and picking up some samples of a few different BB creams. It's fun to try different things anyways. I can't wait to try Dr. Jart Premium: the reviewers all have said that it works best for fair/cool skin tones, fyi.

I use the lightest shade because I am quite pale, I'm not sure if I have pink undertones but I heard it's always better to use products with yellow undertones anyway. I would never advise using a foundation with pink undertones, some brands don't even carry pink undertones anymore.

I have heavy blue undertones and the fair is perfect for me. However, Clinique's BB Cream has a shade for heavy pink undertones that may work better. My girlfriend uses Clinique's shade 2 of their BB cream and she loves it.

I love love love Smashbox primers (hydrating primer in the winter and the "light" in the summer) and would like to know if Smashbox's BB cream primes just as well. If you do need primer prior to the BB cream, in addition to moisturizer and powder like other posters have been saying, then what is the point of having the BB cream?

ok, i decided to try the bb cream in fair, and i really do like it. i tried it in a few different ways: one day with smashbox's hydrating primer, another day with smashbox's light primer, and one day by itself. it actually looks best by itself, but maybe as the weather gets warmer that will change.

I use the BB cream as my primer and it works great. I would suggest getting a sample and trying it out for a few days. That's what I did and I love it and I don't feel like I need a primer with it.

I work a 12 hour shift and my skin still looks good at the end of the day, so I'd say you could go without primer with BB Cream. Plus it has skin care benefits that the primer would prevent from absorbing.

I didn't use a primer and it seemed to work fine. The coverage is pretty sheer and as a result it is lightweight. I say you can try it with the primer if you've got it but it really isn't necessary to use.

I also love the smashbox primers but I think that smashbox bb primes itself or makes for an adequate primer with spf should you choose to use an additional foundation. Given the upcoming summer season, I would use a powder to set it rather than a primer. I like smashbox illuminating primer, but in summer I use it as a highlighter. :-)

I generally judge the need of primer with how much coverage I am looking for on a certain day. If my skin is looking good, I don't bother, if it could use a little extra TLC, than I go ahead and prime :) Hope that helps.

I have acne scars and redness. This helps a lot. I blend it with my fingers and then set it with a powder. Make sure to look at yourself in good light afterwards to be sure it is even.

I have mild acne and I found that this keeps my acne in check. My skin stays a lot calmer now that I'm using this BB cream. That said, it doesn't offer much coverage and definitely won't cover acne scars, dark marks, freckles, etc.

Although BB cream isn't has much high coverage as a foundation, however this product in general, has a VERY high amount of coverage for a BB cream!

I have terrible sensitive skin and many acne scars, because this product contain SPF, it well help with any scar you have, and it is much better than using foundation.

I have acne. You know how after a pimple pops, you're left with a sort of raggedy flaky skin texture where it was for a bit? This stuff cakes on those flaky areas. It also emphasizes any dry flakes. It's a lot more obvious in daylight vs. indoors.

However, it does a great job of toning down redness and reducing the appearance of acne scars (the leftover reddish marks that are not raised). When I layer it, the acne scars almost disappear. It looks really nice and natural on smooth skin, and gives a semi-matte finish.

So, if you have very few pimples, I'd say give this a try. Moisturize well beforehand and dab some primer on any pimples or flakes.

I included two kinda gross photos of this BB cream on my acne skin, no primer, no concealer. The After looks pretty good in the photo, but it looks more obviously cakey on the pimples in real life.

Smashbox goes with Beauty Balm for their version of a bb cream. Other types of bb creams that contain ingredients for fighting acne call them Blemish balms.

What makes this easier/different than foundation?

I have read several of the reviews, from the people who hated this product to the people who love it. A lot of the responses are similar and a lot of them still recommend other products as well. Most people say that using this product still requires a moisturizer, a concealer, and some people also say use a primer and a powder. Well if you STILL need all of those steps, how is this better than a regular tinted moisturizer or a foundation?

Well, look, it depends on what the condition of your skin is, what your regular "look" is, and what your expectations are. If you have major skin issues, and you usually wear a lot of make-up, you may find this product alone does not meet your needs. This product accomplishes a lot, in my opinion. It meets my needs for a natural look with a bit of a glow while controlling the worst of my oily spots. It covers minor redness, smooths, and minimizes pores. And it provides a good SPF. But it can't accomplish miracles (really, no make-up can). Some people may try it and find they need more concealer. Some people may need more moisture. Try to get a sample and find out how it works for you.

It isn't as heavy as foundation or as harsh, plus it has the added benefits of priming (you can use this as a primer for foundation) and SPF. It's also lightweight enough for sensitive skin. But I would still recommend using powder, colored for fuller coverage, translucent (Make up forever HD finishing powder I would recommend!) to get the finest lines in your face. I found that I only needed primer (green-tinted) for really red spots on my face. Hope this helps! :)

I think it's more about finding the right product for you. I am trying to simplify my routine and if this product requires all those extra steps- primer, concealer, powder, ad nauseum- it's simply not the product for me. Hopefully, we both will find the product we're looking for.

I have problem acne skin and use this. It is good for your skin, and although I still need a concealer, I don't need a foundation with this. I use a light moisturizer before this because I have dry skin and it also makes this go on smoothly. It is not heavy like foundation, Just evens out skin tone and covers better than other tinted products I've tried. I use medium, it looks dark until I blend well with a small dot amount. It's not dry looking, stays all day and has SPF. It looks natural even in bright daylight, unlike foundations. Try it, you can always return it.

I think this is good for when you don't really "need" make up. I'm going to use it for when my skin is being "good" and is clear and don't want to put a layer of foundation on when I don't really need it. It looks like you're wearing no makeup, and just smoothes out the skin. On day's where I'm having "bad" (more blemished or blotchy skin), I'll opt to use my regular sunscreen moisturizer and foundation.

I suggest that you moisture even though the BB cream has an moisturizer in it. I find that my face is dry after I wash it so I moisturize and then apply my BB cream and it goes on smoother once m face has moisturizer on.

I have oily skin, and I replaced my daily SPF with this product with great results. I previously used Image Daily Defense Matte Moisturizer, which is the only product I've ever found that controlled my oily skin, until I tried this product. If you DON'T have oily skin, I would definitely use a moisturizer. But if you are primarily looking for SPF and a hint of color with shine control, this is a great product by itself.

absolutely, by all means, wear moisturizer under this product. in my opinion, it does not provide any moisture whatsoever, and was very drying on my skin. it actually highlighted my dryness. unless you have oily skin, definitely use a moisturizer first. or even just an essence/serum.

I don't use foundations because they tend to clog my pores and make my skin worse. Mineral powder was my thing, until I tried BB creams.

So far my skin has only gotten better - less imperfections, smaller pores and hardly any pimples. I combine the BB cream with a retinol treatment at night. The results are great and I have fewer problems.

It's been a few months and I haven't even used my mineral powder...

If your acne is due to covering up exhisting acne, this should not make your acne worse. I find my acne triggers are Bismuth Oxychloride (which is in most powders even Proactive's powder and Bare Minerals!), and certain types of food like red chile, (Taco Bell). And hormones, once a month.

If possible, you should test both on your skin. I'm African American with a medium/tan skin tone with yellow/orange undertones. I usually wear the lightest shade made for "darker" skin tones. I was skeptical that the medium would work for me but it does. It actually gives me a light coverage and makes my skin look like I have a very light tan, similar to a bronzer but lighter.

they tend to run a little on the dark side so i might go light...that said they will let you take home samples of each so you can try it out first, you may unfortunately fall in that middle category and have to mix the shades for your perfect color.

The light halo is too light for me so I would always use the medium (it was great when I had a tan but a little darker than I needed in the winter). I would use the new light/medium in the halo.
The light in the bb cream is a great match for me, the medium was definitely darker than the medium in the halo.

The medium is pretty dark - I also am light but with a tan and I found the 'light' works fine for me. I may go to the medium in the summer when my tan is more pronounced.

I think you should get light or light/medium. My friend who also purchased this is from Guam and tans easily (no burning) and she found the Medium to be too dark for her skin. I would liken her complexion to that of Cassie (see pic)
