I'm pretty fair and tend to wear the lighest shade in any foundation (I go between shades Linen and Alabaster in the Even Better foundation) and got this in shade 1. I think shade 1 is the more neutral toned between this and shade 2...shade 2 appeared a bit more orange-toned next to shade 1 when I swatched them.

I am also fair with neutral undertones and I wear the lightest shade (shade 01) the best way to know is to go to the counter and get matched, but if that isn't and option, I would always pick the lighter shade as shades 01 and 02 are pretty similar and just use a matching face powder to set it, or light bronzer if you feel it may be too light. Clinique has a great return/exchange policy if you are incorrectly matched or your color doesn't match, you can find your shade yourself and your skin type at the clinique website.

I am light and went with the shade 02. The shades seem very true-to-life. Personally, I go with one shade darker so I don't look too fair.

Question
Difference between this and foundation?
I have very acne prone skin and right now I'm using bareminerals. I want something a bit lighter for summer and I'm wondering will this be better for my skin or worse? Does this count as makeup?

Its more moisturizing and makes my skin feel light and silky all day. It has less pigment so it has sheer/medium coverage.

I use it as a foundation because it is lightweight. It also is great for creating an even skin-tone.My skin is acne prone as well and I have yet to breakout.

I was also matched at the Clinique counter to #3 (others were too light or too dark), however, when I got home and tried it out myself and checked it in the sunlight, it had too much red in it for me with my yellow undertone so I can't just put it on my face and neck. I have to also cover any skin showing above my neckline. I wish more detailed descriptions were included for all of the foundations.

the best way to get the right color is to go to any Clinique counter and have their representative help you out..i would have bought number 1, b ut I found 3 to be my perfect shade..then I came home and ordered it from Sephora!!also just a fyi when trying foundation colors try them on the jaw line to truly get the right color..i don't know why but it works..
its a great product by the way..and I have tried many many tinted moisturizers..this is the best and the price is better then a lot of the otheeers..you can always trust Clinique.

Although this is a "tinted moisturizer", you don't want to forego wearing moisturizer, or any type of hydrating cream/lotion, if that's what you normally do. Moisture Surge and Moisture Surge Intense are great companion moisturizers to this sheer foundation. If you are oilier-skinned, or prefer a super lightweight moisturizer, try the regular version. If you are dry, try the Intense version. Also, make sure you let your moisturizer sink in for a few minutes before you try to put any foundation on top. Have a cup of coffee or read the news online until your moisturizer no longer feels tacky, then you can layer foundation on top without it pilling up.

I use this product like a foundation kinda.
I put on my moisturizer and then my concealer and then the tinted moisturizer and top it off with some powder to set it.

It would probably be great with a primer, but I don't use a primer and I have found that it has great staying power!

I would say this is supposed to take the place of the primer bc it's all inclusive, as a BB cream. I wear my BB cream all day on weekends when I don't want to wear a lot and it lasts.

Question
If I wear Clinique Perfectly Real Makeup Shade 01 would I use the same shade for the tinted moisturizer?
I am going to Costa Rica in a few weeks. When I was there last year my makeup was worthless. I tried wearing it the first day, wasn't worth it. Never put it on after that. Was looking to possibly invest in a tinted moisturizer. Should I stick with Clinique and would I buy the same shade or is there something else I should try?

You should try the Tarte Clay Foundation. I've switched over to that from Clinique as it seems to be sweat proof and long lasting. The coverage is pretty versatile - you can layer it on or thin it out to fit your needs.

How does this compare to Clinique Almost Makeup (the liquid version that was just discontinued)?

I prefer this over the Almost Makeup. I could never get a shade light enough for me in the almost Makeup, that was problem number 1. Problem number 2 was that the Almost Makeup made me feel greasy throughout the day and felt heavy, almost mask-like. I also was never really impressed with the coverage.
The Moisture Surge TM has better coverage I think, and it's buildable if you need more coverage in a certain area...I can almost get the same results using this as I do with my Even Better foundation. And it feels so much lighter, it's truly impressive. I can't say enough good things!

The two formulas are very different. Almost makeup was more creamy and more pigmented, it felt thicker, and heavier. Moisture Surge TM feels more like a gel, like the actual moisture surge moisturizer, but more fluid, it is very light feeling and gives build-able sheer coverage. The Moisture surge TM costs a few dollars more, and the packaging is smaller, but the product can be used sparingly and is very flattering, also it does not leave your skin looking "shiny," so that if you don't want to set it with a powder you don't have to. It feels very nice. I live in the new england area where it is still cold and windy and just switched from almost makeup four days ago and the improvement is phenomenal. No more dry, windburnt cheeks!

Question
Bad for combination skin?
I am oily in my t-zone, but I want to find a good tinted moisturizer. Would this be bad since I tend to get oily?

I have oily/combo skin with most of my oiliness occuring in my t-zone. This did not add any more shine to my face, in fact, I think it held up a bit better than some foundations I use...which is odd considering it's a tinted moisturizer. I think the fact that it's based off the Moisture Surge helps a lot...since it's a gel-based moisturizer. I never get greasy from using moisture surge. It's def. worth a shot even if you're oily - it hold up great, in my opinion.

Great question!
For oily skin, your best bet would be to use an oil- free moisturizer and a mineral foundation over it (try Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer with Bare Minerals foundation on top)
I guess if you really wanted to go with a tinted moisturizer it would be better than liquid foundation, but it may still make you really shiny.

Question
How much coverage does this provide?
I have some redness around my nose and dark circles under my eyes, and I was wondering if this would provide enough coverage to hide those a bit. On a scale of water to paint, how much coverage can I get from this?

It's like 2 up from water, nowhere near paint. But I wouldn't put it around your eyes! If your eyes are sensitive at all, the sunscreen in this will burn and won't feel good! Trust me, I know. This lightly covers my skin and feels smooth going on. I found that it covered light redness just fine.
