I belive on their website I read that is a chemical and they gave the reason why they use that instead of a natural blocker. Check out their website. Lots of great info on it.

the spf is a chemical sunblock. I checked out the official Algenist website at www.Algenist.com and under the FAQ listing they give the following information:
"The specific SPF ingredients in the Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 20 are Avobenzone, Homosalate, and Octisalate which are chemical sunscreens. Algenist is formulated with chemical rather than physical sunscreens because physical sunscreens are known for imparting a “ghosting” or whitening effect on the skin while chemical sunscreens do not. In addition, physical sunscreens provide UVB sun protection but often fall short on full spectrum and UVA protection. At Algenist, it is essential to us that we provide both full spectrum UVB and UVA sun protection and therefore we choose to formulate with chemical sunscreens. "
