Kat Von D Lock 'N Load Makeup Setting Mist

What it is:A 16-hour mist that extends the wear of makeup. What it does: Lock n' Load is a weightless mist that locks down your look for up to 16-hours, so makeup stays rockin' all day and night long. Its climate balancing ingredients help prevent makeup melt-downs when it's hot, and they protect against dehydration and cracking in the cold. Ideal for all skin types, it won't leave skin feeling sticky or tight. It also works to prevent blush, eye shadow, or lip color from fading, sliding, caking, or becoming excessively shiny. What else you need to know:"I've tried every setting spray and nothing has worked for me, so I've been working for the last two years to develop my Lock n' Load setting mist. I need my makeup to stay locked down, on my terms. I spend long days working at my tattoo shop and heading out to events at night. Not only does it lock my makeup, but it actually makes my skin look brighter and healthier because of its hydrating ingredients. Other sprays feel like I'm just spraying hairspray on my face, or they don't perform the way they claim to. Lock n' Load is the first technology I've found that actually keeps my makeup locked down for as long as I need."—Kat Von D, tattoo artist

Questions & Answers for Kat Von D Lock 'N Load Makeup Setting Mist

Question
How to use?
Do you use this before or after you do your makeup? Because I've been using it after, but it leaves heavy droplets on my foundation, which then take forever to dry. And I don't find it keeps my foundation well at all. In fact, I've been finding that it has the opposite effect :(
Please help!

It sounds like you're holding the bottle too close to your face while using it. It should go on after your foundation, and you should try to hold it about 10 inches or so away from your face.

I have the same problem with this spray. I ended up giving it away. I have a little bit of oily skin and after applying makeup, I would spray this on, and it left heavy droplets! It smudged my mascara, and made my foundation and powder blotchy and run. I don't recommend this at all.

I agree! It is supposed to be used after you apply your foundation, check color, eye shadow..but not before mascara. When I use it I stick my head in front of a fan to help it dry fast...i def. wont buy this again.

I would suggest holding it a whole arm's length away and moving it across your face. The spritzer may go on a bit thick, which takes it longer to dry. Hope that helps!

I use this after all my makeup is applied. I hold it about 10-12 inches away from my face and just do several light spritzes over my entire face. I keep my eyes closed a few seconds and it is dry. It works great. I find that my foundation, blush, powder all stay longer than without the mist.
Possibly holding it too close to the face and using heavy blasts of spray may be too much for the makeup and not really how it was meant to be used. Not sure what else could cause large droplets on the face.

Are you maybe spraying it too closely to your skin? I spray it about an arms length away and it gives me the perfect amount of coverage and doesn't run at all!

The Lock N' Load Setting Mist is meant to be applied after applying your makeup. We suggest holding the bottle about 4"-5" away from the face and misting twice. If heavy droplets happen to form on your foundation you can take a tissue to dab the excess product off.

You would still want an eye primer and I find eye product still moves without a primer. With a primer the spray truly make you makeup last all day.

I have been having a really hard time to find a primer that I like without breaking the bank. I'm OBSESSED with the hourglass primer but it is so expensive. This product definitely helps if you do not use a primer. I use this product without a primer.

Yes, you will still need a primer. This product just sets in your make up after you have finished applying all of it. It does not act as a primer for your eyes.

I still suggest using a primer in addition to the Lock and Load. The mist will extend the wear of your make up, I suggest applying it as your last step in your make up routine.

I would still use an eyeshadow primer. The primer evens out any uneven skin tones and keeps the eyeshadow from creasing. Plus, I think that primer makes your eyeshadow colors more vibrant.

Yes, you would. This just seals in your makeup, so you use it after you do your makeup. Use a primer to make your eyeshadow pop, then spray it over to seal in your look. Hope that helped!

I still use a primer simply because it allows my shadows to apply easier and smoother. This does not keep shadow from creasing as that would be a characteristic of the shadow with the eye. Whether to use a primer would be your individual opinion.
I think the mist is great for setting all over makeup rather than one particular area.

I would say yes. First of all, becuase this is supposed to be a finishing/setting product, so you'll still need something to prep your lids. Kat has some nice ones, but all of the lines here really do. I found this product not to work well for me, and I would definitely not recommend using it in the eye area. But by all means, please prime your lids first - it's the best beauty secret we all seem to have!

you apply this after makeup! Essentially once your face is done you spray this on and it sets everything for the day ahead. The UD sprays are a before the makeup like a primer, this is definitely a finishing spray. I have added on top of the spray and the finish never look as nice as noting on top of the spray.

The spray does contain alcohol and fragrances which may be drying for acne prone skin, you may want to apply a primer underneath your foundation first, or do a test run of the product since items react differently to each person, but otherwise it should be suitable for all skin types.

I have oily skin, and it works fine, but if you have more acne prone skin it may be irritating. I found that it smelled a bit strong, so it may be a bit irritating. But if you have a primer that works for acne prone skin (like neutrogena primer or something) it might work out better for you. Hope that helped!

I'm very oily/acne prone and I bought this thinking that I'd at least have a pretty bottle for my collection! I've used it multiple times and have not had breakouts at all. (But I wear Neutrogena Oil-Free Mousturizer and Oil-Free Foundation, so maybe because this sits on top of all that it doesn't actually touch my bare skin.) Give it a try!

Does this help those with oily skin keep their makeup shine free? If so how long?
I like I said above have very oily skin and have tried several types of makeup setting mists. That being said I want to know this product actually keeps its promises. I want to know how long the oil control will last from the moment you spray it on. Also if I jumped in the river will it withhold 1 quick splash? Thanks to any1 that answers

I was shine free for about four hours with this, but to be fair I didn't use any primer under my makeup so that might have helped the longevity of this product. I did get caught in a little rain while wearing this and my makeup seemed fine afterwards.

I've got a very oily T-zone, and purchased this spray to help combat that, along with generally wanting to keep my makeup looking fresh for as long as possible. I will tell you now to avoid this product if you are looking to minimize oil or avoid makeup runnage of any sort. I am back to being shiny about two hours in, if I am lucky. Tears also cut right through it, so I assume jumping into the river would be worse :)

I have oily skin, I'm 23, and all this spray did for me was smudge my makeup. You might literally have to let your makeup sit for awhile before spraying this on. My mascara started to run and my shadow looked smudged too much, plus it gave my skin an itchy moist feeling like I'd been sweating :(

I have very oily skin too and that was another reason why I wanted to try it and I really do think it helped! My skin did not seem to get as oily. After a whole day of wear I did see a tiny bit of shine in my T-zone, but not even close to how shiny it usually gets by the end of the day. Even if I get sweaty from being outside in the hot sun my makeup seems to stay in place.

Question
how does Lock'n Load compare to urban decay all nighter?
I have used and liked urban decay all nighter. In fact I use it daily after applying bare minerals. Since I live in a desert environment, I want something that not only sets my mineral makeup, but keeps it in place all day. I have 50+ old skin, that is sensitive-to-dry. I would love to hear suggestions.

I would use an oil-absorbing primer under your makeup first, just to be safe. My skin is moderately oily and I had some shine at the end of the night after using this. My advice for extremely oily skin is to prime, conceal, use a thin layer of foundation, then use this to set it all in place :)

My skin is combination, but can be very oily around my nose. I used the lock it tattoo foundation without it and it ran and got all over everything. My nose was splotchy and streaky by the very end of the day. Since then, I used it with the spray and my makeup stays in place.

It has a slight sheen to it, so if you like a super matte look, this is not for you, but if you want a slightly dewy look, this is great.
