I have combination skin which ranges from VERY oily to quite dry on my cheeks. I was skeptical but it really works on either skin type. However, I would avoid using it all over your face and concentrate just around your cheeks.

I have combo skin and it was fine. I usually hate the feeling of oily stuff on my face. Has a light texture to it. I guess that's why they call it a "serum" instead of "moisturizer".

I have very oily skin, and while it does stay put, I have to constantly blot my skin with oil-absorbing papers throughout the day since it makes my skin look shiny, not shimmery. I probably won't be able to use it in the summer once it starts to get really hot/humid.

Hi! I do have oily skin and didn't like it on top of moisturizer. It did transfer a lot and my face looked a lot oilier than normal. So I started to try different ways to apply as product description doesn't say anything about it. The best results - and now I love it this way - are when I mix the serum with foundation and apply them on top of primer (I use Tarte anti-wrinkle). It looks flawless and just a healthy glow, as it should be natural skin. And to avoid transfer I buff a little finishing powder on top, it works well. I hope it helps.

I have oilier skin, and this has really helped keep my skin balanced during the day. For the first time in a long time, my makeup actually stays put, and I don't look like a total oil slick by the end of the day. It has also helped my makeup from caking into my pores and making them look huge.

mine is oily/acne prone and I've been using Tarte products - foundation, powder, cheek color - for more than a year. They haven't given me any problems ( I wear them for average 7 1/2 hours per day, 5 days p/w). I've been using this "serum" as a day moisturizer. It helps with my T zone during cold + dry weather and does hold foundation pretty well. No pore - clogging either. The shimmering part is JUST BARELY there, even under daylight .

I don't see why you couldn't use this even if you have acne. It all depends on how oily your face gets. I have dry skin but if your skin reacts to additional moisture, I might try a little as a test and see how your face does. The serum is meant to leave you with a healthy and bright glow. See if you can get a sample of it when it is out in the stores and try it first before you buy it. I think you'll love it!!!

My mom swears by the Laura Mercier illuminating TM. I found it to be way too gold. If you are under the age of 40, I would say try this. It is much more natural. The LM has more of a gold flecked effect to it. This is also less oily.

answer 2
I have used both and like both. The Laura Mercier may be a tad heavier and offer even more "illumination". I've heard people say they only like LM illuminating as a highlighter, but I liked it allover. The Tarte product was lighter and sunk into my skin more. I, personally, liked how the LM made my skin look more, because it is more oily and I have dry skin so of course it made it look better.

answer 3
I actually use both. The only difference I can see is this is more "illuminating" (not shiny--it's very subtle) than the Laura Mercier, but I like both products. I also think the Laura Mercier is much lighter coverage.

I have tried both products, and although I like the Laura Mercier product, I felt like is was a bit thick, and it didn't stay put as well. Also, this serum by tarte moisturizes without making my face feel too oily. The tinted moisturizer illuminating by Laura Mercier was enough so I felt I had to use powder over it. I think Smooth Operator is definitely a better product, especially considering the price.

Tarte one is more a moisturizer with a hint of shimmer without "tinted" part. For me it gives less coverage than LM tinted moisturizer. Shimmering affect is both about the same to me, yet I like Tarte one better under daylight on my oily skin.

I would use it under the tinted moisturizer to correct skin issues so that the tinted moisturizer can do a better job of coverage without looking like coverage. The "I.S." corrects and brightens with hardly any coverage at all that I can see. When I use the "T.M." by itself it shows itself when it is put over top of my Rosacea red cheeks and freckles. So correct, then cover. :)

When I want a little more coverage or color I use a tinted moisturizer with this but otherwise it works alone as both (I actually mix of drop of both together). This moisturizes your skin all day & night so using under anything else is great & the perfect dewy glow will shine through but you may find it is all you need for the perfect sheer coverage, too. Your skin will feel great.

Question
What is the specific color, please?
I'm seeing comments about this being lighter or darker than some reviewers' skin tones but can't find info describing the actual color. I'm hoping to learn if it's a neutral beige or if it has a pink cast or peach cast or yellow cast, etc, please. I'd also appreciate knowing if it has metallic aspect and, if so, what tone that is (gold, silver, pink, etc.) please. TIA

I'm italian and have a medium/olive tone, so when I apply it, it looks fairly yellow with gold glitter effect. But it's very subtle which I love. I think it blends with whatever kind of skin you have.. if you have more of a peachy or rosy undertone in your skin, it would blend to a pink shimmer effect. I've reccomended this product to several friends and they all love it and no one has the same skin tone... the ONLY downfall is, it can look greasy, especially if you don't shake it first... so use sparingly.

This blended into my skin perfectly and I have hyper-pigmentation from Rosacea, freckles and extremely pale skin with yellow undertone. If you are darker complected, it may actually show a little bit as lighter than your complexion but it is correcting and illuminating more than coverage.

The color itself blends in with your skin. I'd say even if you have super pale skin, you could still use a little bit as a highlighter on your cheeks or something. As for the shimmer, I think the shimmer is sort of pink/copper. I have a golden skin tone, and I think this is giving me a pink glow. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to keep this.

I think they are very different. The tinted moisturizer does still have a bit of a shimmering effect but it is heavier coverage, believe it or not, and can sometimes not work as well to correct hyper-pigmentation, like with me because I have Rosacea. The Illuminating Serum is lighter, blends in to any skin tone and corrects and brightens where the tinted moisturizer just covers... better than others I have seen, but still. I feel I may have eliminated the need to use the tinted moisturizer now that I have the illuminating serum. Hope that helps :)

This is definitely NOT a TM, the product is specifically a highlight. The pigment of the product is very similar to the bottle it comes in, but once it is blended out you are left with a very soft sheen effect. Best to stick with an actual TM and use this as a highlight only!

These products are not similar. The tinted moisturizer is exactly what it says. It's an SPF 20 moisturizer with light coverage in a range of foundation colors. Illuminating serum has NO coverage. It is a skin brightener that adds a sheen to the skin. It makes your skin radiant like it did when you were younger. Can be worn under the tinted moisturizer, under liquid or powder foundation, or alone if you happen to have perfect skin.

This one does not offer as much coverage as a tinted moisturizer, but the subtle light-reflecting particles do make it possible for you to wear this alone if you'd like. I have a 0.3 fl oz deluxe sample size of Tarte Illuminizating Serum which I have been using daily for the past 3 weeks. There is still quite a bit left in the tube. Since this is a serum and not intended as a tinted moisturizer (although it may work for some as a TM), I mix equal parts of Tarte with my liquid foundation and then apply. Very little product -- less than pea size amount -- is needed since it is creamy, but it gives a nice glow and flawless-looking finish to my skin. The clay in the Tarte really does absorb any excess oils on my face without drying out my face. It is expensive, however, the full size tube should last for about a year.
