they about 1.5, maybe 2 sq. inches...i have really long hair but it's very fine & thin and these work great to hold it up in a twist. if you have thicker coarser hair i would recommend the larger clip if you want to use it to put all your hair up.

2 inches across. Clamp closes down to 1/2 inch thick
the clips are not huge but they are not tiny. I have medium-thin hair and used the clip to do a half-up half-down.

Probably less than 2 inches across total. If you use a traditional butterfly cllp, this is about the same, but more stylish.

They are about 1 inch x 1 inch. Even though they are small they can hold a lot of hair. Or you can put just a small section of hair into them and they hold. The clamps are good because of that versatility and becuase when you lean your head back it is more comfortable then a regular clip.
