Questions & Answers for ALTERNA CAVIAR Anti-Aging® Replenishing Moisture Conditioner

Question
Use of condtioner without the shampoo
Caviar shampoo users describe hair feeling dry before using this conditioner. Does it work well with other brands of shampoo, just using the Caviar conditioner with a less expensive shampoo?

I could only afford the Caviar conditioner so went for ALTERNA's Bamboo shampoo to pair with it. It still has the same moisturizing effect. Leaves my hair feeling healthy, soft, shiny and smelling great.

I only bought the conditioner, and use it with my argan oil shampoo. I think it works great, but I would love to buy the shampoo as well. Leaves my hair incredibly soft and nourished as-is though!

I never used the caviar shampoo because I thought it was too expensive. I use a cheaper shampoo with the caviar conditioner and it makes my hair soft and shiny.

Yes, I think this conditioner would help moisturize without also using a pricey shampoo. It's moisturizing enough that it probably would help dry hair even with a standard shampoo. However, I didnt think this product moisturized much better than higher-end hair masques available at the drugstore.

The shampoo is really great. I think if I used the shampoo alone my hair would still look good but I need moisturizing and detangling. The conditioner is FABULOUS and would probably work really good with a cheaper shampoo. I use the Alterna shampoo because it really helps hold my color and keep my hair in great shape. Other shampoos have really stripped my hair and made the color fade quickly - within two or three weeks. In my opinion, it's worth the investment. I try and stagger buying them so I am not paying $60 plus everytime. The shampoo lasts twice as long for me than the conditioner. I have long hair down the middle of my back.

I found this product o live up to it's promises. Did not use the shampoo without the conditioner so can't speak on that. I also didn't note my hair feeling dry after the shampoo and even was looking for that after reading previous reviews, That was not my experience. But, it certainly did transform my dry brittle hair in one use!!!

Question
smell?
What does this product smell like? I'm very sensitive to smell and since switching to sulfate free shampoos & conditioners have only found some rose & honey ones at whole foods that I like but they're not moisturizing enough...

Honestly I don't find the scent of it to be very strong at all. I find the smell to be pleasant, but it's not very flowery/perfume-y like a lot of drug store shampoos, if that's what you're hoping for.

It smells like a jasmine green tea. Also smells very similar to Elizabeth Arden Green Tea perfume or Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Hony Drops body cream. Enjoy it - this particular product is really awesome.

If you like something that smells sweet or flowery, you will not look this smell. It is very spicy/woodsy. Think Obsession or John Varvatos.

The fragrance is pretty strong floral/fresh. I like it because the scent seems to last all day and i think it smells good. It might be too strong for those who are sensitive to fragrance.

This does have a smell. It's pretty light and clean smelling - nothing overpowering. I like it and I don't like things that are overpowering or perfume-ish. I think this would work for you. It's a GREAT conditioner. I am hooked on it. I have never bought any conditioner more than two times in a row and I am on here buying my seventh or eight bottle so far.

You can apply all over, but it is not necessary as it repairs hair and roots are new growth.

You have to apply it on the hair from the roots to the ends. As it contains silicones, I wouldn't (and don't..) massage it in the sculp too much though.

answer 3
I think that depends on your hair type. If you have fine, thin, or lifeless hair- I suggest to use it more on the ends so that your hair isn't weighed down. However-that being said- I have just that hair type and have used this product on my full head and had no added weight from the moisture.
I feel this is one of the best conditioners around, so I recommend trying it and seeing which way works best for you.

Both. It actually tells you to massage in from roots to ends. I guess it depends on how oily your hair/scalp gets though. If you have an oil problem, I'd just keep it to the ends.

Question
How does it work for fine hair?
I have very fine, thin hair that gets greasy fast no matter what kind of conditioner I use. Also, my hair has become more fine over the last year as it keeps falling out. How does this product work on very fine, thin hair?

My scalp became itchy from using this and unfortunately I used it once and had to return it immediately because even though using it in the shower and detangled was okay, it turned to the worse when my hair air dried and it was super dry, had more breakage and tons of frizz compared to other shampoo and conditioners. I was happy when I returned it.

I wouldn't recommend it this for fine hair. I use it, and it works beautifully for me, but I have extremely thick, coarse hair. I think this would be too much for fine hair.

I'm not sure this is for you if you grease up easily. I don't and although I love this shampoo/conditioner, my hair seems to need washing more often to feel "clean" and full.

Question
this vs the caviar volumizing conditioner?
I've tried the volumizing one but was wondering what the difference between the two is? Do they smell the same? I have straight fine hair but the ends are more dry and scalp is more oily. The volumizing conditioner seems ok but was wondering if this would be better and not weigh down my hair too much.

I have fine and thin hair and as I said in my review I love this Alterna moisturizing conditioner. I have never had particularly good luck with volumizing conditioner (if they give me volume they do not give me the moisturizing I need). This does not seem to weigh my hair down. I have not tried the Alterna volumiziing conditioner so cannot compare the smell or results.

I would definately recommend this product. I have fine straight hair as well and this is my new favorite product. It does not leave my hair oily and seems to hydrate perfectly.

Question
Can this be used as a co-wash?
I am trying to cut out shampoo (I have super dry, coarse, thick hair that can go 8-10 days w/o a clarifying wash) and have tried Wen but was underwhelmed (my hair ended up my dry than in the beginning). I am looking for a conditioner that could act as a co-wash (as it seems many conditioners can), and as this seems to be free of most of the 'naughty' ingredients I am hoping to avoid to keep my hair healthy in the long run, I am wondering if it's a possibility. Anyone have any experience with this? By the way, "weighing down hair" is a plus to me... that's how dry my hair is!

I would say no. I have dry hair as well, but not as dray as you describe yours. This conditioner definitely does not have any cleaning qualities. It is purely a moisturizer. But you might try washing your hair with just water. You could even use distilled water and then use the conditioner. I have a friend with very dry hair who does this and her hair looks clean and lovely. She only uses plain water to wash her hair. You might also try the shampoo that goes with this conditioner- the CAVIAR shampoo and use it once every 2 weeks or so to see how that works for you.

Question
Is the conditioner free of sulfates?
While my shampoo bottle specifically says "free of sulfates," my conditioner bottle lists other stuff it's free of, and says nothing of sulfates. I am worried because I just got a keratin treatment and want it to last. Please advise!

Only shampoos have sulfates. This is why you don't usually see it on conditioners.

Silicones
I bought this conditioner with the caviar fortifying detox shampoo to avoid product build up and keep hair moisturized. I just saw that it has silicones..will this make my shampoo useless and cause build up?

I am not positive but I say try it. I have tried a million conditioners and this is the ONLY one that leaves my hair soft and silky. Sephora has an excellent return policy so if you don't like the results, return it!

I am not a chemist, but I use this exact product and I do not have any buildup on my hair or scalp. I have been using this product for about 6 months and my hair looks as good as it did when I was in high school, shiny with great body and I color my hair. My hairdresser said she had never seen my hair so healthy and pretty and she has been my hairdresser for 18 years. I use the matching shampoo with this conditioner as well.
