It's better to melt the product first - as it forms to the well and stays in place. If you scoop and smash it may make a big mess.

You can scoop it in, but you won't get that clean of a surface to work from like you would have if you purchased a palette of lipsticks.

the wells are about 4 mm deep, 2 cm wide, and 1.3 cm long (which sounds tiny, but it worked completely perfectly for me). you don't have to melt the lipstick, but the mirror's pretty close to the pans so if you don't smooth them enough it would get all over the top. i'd recommend just melting the lipstick. it takes next to no time to melt and looks so much cleaner.
