how does this look on darker complexions?

I'm pretty tan (NC40) and I have no issues using the translucent white. There's absolutely no ghost effect. In fact, I dust it over my eyeshadow and it doesn't change the color of it at all. I worry about the bronze (haven't tried it), since I think it may actually change the color of my makeup. Definitely don't need to be more bronze. I'd say go for the white.

I have medium/tan skin (with golden undertones) and a lot of the white so-called translucent powders make me look and feel a bit like a kabuki doll (super white face). However, unless you go way overboard with this powder, it doesn't seem to noticeably lighten my face at all. I was using the bare minerals mineral veil before and hated that it always seemed to lighten my face too much, so this is a very nice difference!

at first it may seem white, but give it a couple minutes to absorb and you should be good. I have the same complexion, I think and have not noticed any, "whiteness"

okay so I'm just like you and use the tan color in the amazonian clay foundation and the translucent powder is a miracle. Unlike MAC prep & prime or MUFE HD powder that makes you look funny and doesn't really work for oily skin like it says it suppose to, this powder doesn't change the look of the foundation but just makes everything look so flawless and makes your pores dissapear....amazing. Doesn't cast any white on the skin. Also you can keep adding it on the skin and it never looks like you are putting on too much unlike other powders that you have to lightly 'dust' on your skin and if you put too much it makes you look cakey or powdery....this one doesn't. If you have oily skin this is a must also. I have not tried the bronzey color one so I can't say but the translucent one is wonderful and I too don't like translucent usually as they look weird on darker skintones...not this one.

Packaging Problem???

I'm trying to decide if I have a defective container or just don't know how to use this...
When I received my powder, I opened the lid, pulled out a little plastic plug and revealed a VERY small hole in the center of the powder cap. It literally takes me 5 minutes to tap out enough powder. Am I doing something wrong?

Nope, this is normal and, yes, a little annoying. I really appreciate that it can't spill like other powders though. I just shake it like a polaroid picture for a couple of seconds before I open it up in the morning. That usually does the trick.

The Tarte smooth operator powder container comes with a tiny hole yes, ...I suppose you could go to the container store & get another powder container with more holes if you want...I just recommend you keep the cap on and shake it up a bunch, then open it, dip & tap your brush & you should have plenty of powder each time:) Hope that helps.:)

You're supposed to press down on the lid (plastic) that has the hole and it's supposed to make the product pop out like as if its a pimple (sorry for the image!)

No, I just actually posted about this in my review so that is funny you mention it. It is not a defect, just poor design. I take the whole seal out (the seal with the small tiny hole) and carefully dump out a larger portion onto the lid. Lasts for days and much easier than tapping the container to wait for the smallest flakes to come out. Yes, I agree, very weird packaging design but not defective!

the delivery system/packaging is a bit wonky; I just tap/pound the bottom and when I open the top there seems to be enough product on the underside of the lid to do my face. Not as free flowing as BE, but will no doubt last longer :)

My suggestion for young acne prone skin is get b.e. foundation. If you have tried generic mineral makeups but did not like them, be is not like them. It is the best brand for acne prone or sensitive skin because there are only a few ingredients in each product. be foundation will never make you break out. I will even go as far as to say, your skin may get better if you switch to it from a liquid foundation. I had bad acne when I was a teen and it really helped me. Get a starter kit that has foundation and mineral veil that you can use to absorb oil through out the day. A nice bonus is that be is fairly inexpensive for a brand make up. Normally I would give the advice to introduce products very slowly. Every three days for a week, to every two days for a week, to every day, to several times a day if needed. This way you will know what is causing a reaction or if you will break out from it. Also to introduce one new thing at a time. However, be is so gentle and so good for acne prone skin that I think just go for it. If you tried it previously and had an allergy to it, try the new matte formula. When you are acne prone, look out for silicone in your face products. Some acne prone people have a reaction to it, and it seems like it is in everything. Not everyone does though, so just pay attention if you use something with it.
Anyway to answer your question, I have read reviews that a few people broke out from this. I think try be first, particularly on young acne prone oily skin. I would be shocked if someone said that be made them breakout.

Tarte is soooooo much better that Mineral Veil! It's much more oil absorbing & really softens the complexion. It never looks cakey, no matter how much you use. Best of all it REALLY does make pores less visible. I love BE foundation, but I'll be using Tarte's finishing powder from now on.

I think it is a good switch, though I still use my be most days. I like it for when I use liquid foundation. I have yet to notice a difference in pore size from it. If you are looking for shrinking pores, get be's night transformation powder or treatment in a color. I find the clear is not as effective. It made me breakout initially, but not bad and it went away pretty quick and that does shrink your pores but it takes a little while of using it nightly...roughly a month for me.
As for this compared to mineral veil, I like it enough to use it up but will probably buy mineral veil next time.

There is no evidence that lysophosphatidic acid could be absorbed through the skin. I am sure as is a friend of mine who has done copious amounts of cancer research, that it would be safe. However as you note, an alternative could be considered.

remember - natural doesn't necessarily mean safe: lead and mercury are natural, too, but not safe. and I think that if any of the ingredients actually changed the structure of your skin, the FDA wouldn't allow it in OTC cosmetics. so I really wouldn't worry about the toxicity of any of the ingredients.

Yes, I use to for touch ups and it works very well. Much better than reapplying foundation or powder. I actually have found, though, that since using it, I don't need to touch up that much! It does such a good job with keeping that matte look.

LPA is pretty much a known carcinogen. it is a "signaling" molecule that has been linked to cancer.
From wikipedia:
"Dysregulation of autotaxin or the LPA receptors can lead to hyperproliferation, which may contribute to oncogenesis and metastasis."

i was disappointed to find this out after assuming that tarte was a wholesome "natural" cosmetics company. i also discovered that this product made me itch because of the LPA in it.

makeup is supposed to enhance your natural beauty, not hinder or alter your body's processes.
tarte, please think about your customers safety and well-being and live up to your "natural" name - don't just be concerned with a products' performance and how exquisite it sounds.

Can this product be reapplied for touchups throughout the day?

I currently am using Mattify!Cosmetics shine powder, a natural mattifying powder, which I can buff into my skin with a fluffy brush throughout the day when the inevitable oil slick emerges. It goes on smoothly and invisibly and does not disturb my makeup. I thought, until recently, that it was my holy grail for obscenely oily skin.

Problem is Mattify! is full of cornstarch and I started breaking out in horrible cystic acne within a few weeks of using the product (in spite of costly dermatologist prescriptions which have been working like a charm until I started using the powder). Turns out cornstarch is food for bacteria and I've actually been inviting the acne to return by using the product. Now I am seeking something natural which delivers equal results without the cornstarch.

So, can this stuff be used to buff away shine throughout the day without disturbing makeup? I do use blotting papers but they disturb my makeup after the repeated use necessary to keep the excessive shine at bay, so I need a powder that can eliminate the oil without looking cakey or patchy or messing up my makeup.

BTW I have tried Urban Decay DeSlick and found that it was AWFUL for touchups and did not deliver on its promises of keeping me matte without need for touchup. It also is full of parabens and other nasty stuff. Tried the gel too and it was just a mess. Useless.

I have yet to find any makeup as good for acne prone skin as be. I would be hocked if someone told me that be made them breakout. Get a kit with the foundation and mineral veil. If you want heavier coverage, get the heavenly face or buki brush. Lighter coverage, get the flawless face. If you have dark circles, get a bisque in a color that works for you. It really is the best makeup for acne prone skin.

This is the first mattifying product I have used other than pressed powder compacts and I am completely impressed. Yes, it can be reapplied. I have even added cream blushes to my cheeks after brushing this on and there is no "pilling" or any other problems. One reviewer wrote that she felt this left her looking pale. I haven't experienced this problem, but I have used Smooth Operator both over and beneath my powder foundation with great results either way. 'Hope this helps! I think you'll love this product! It depends on your age. If you are young and pretty much without wrinkles or lines, I love b.e. foundation for oily skin. If you have some lines, I love the new tarte foundation. It is sold at sephora yet, but it will be soon. It says it is medium to heavy coverage, but I apply it very lightly and it works as a light to medium coverage and it is great on oily skin, the best I have ever tried.

I do not recommend to apply a liquid product on top of this powder. It just would not look natural. Use a mineralised skin finish instead. It will add the right amount of shimmer to your skin and make it look more natural. I use it this way.

Trying to apply a liquid over a powder gets tricky. I would say, do it sparingly at first. This particular powder is so sheer that I think it would work well if you do so carefully. Some powders form little product balls and bunch up, but this one doesn't.

I don't think that it would clog your pores but I do think the combination of liquid over the powder would give you a weird "cakey" finish. Its a very light powder though. The matte it gives is not a true dry matte.

I use( Benefit )liquid high beam first, then apply base makeup, concealer. After I get a flawless look, I apply the Smooth Operator powder only in areas that need it --- my T zone. The luminizer shows through after a minute in areas where Smooth Operator was applied.. I would use a powder luminizer, Sephora's trio is great, for extra touches of luminosity if wanted.

Well, as long as High Beam is non-comenagenic you should be fine! But in my opinion it makes much more sense to put High Beam underneath the setting powder because the powder will just insure it lasts longer. Its not going to take away the luminizingness of it, just soften the look a bit. And since High Beam is a cream you wouldn't nessacerily want to put that on top of any powder just incase some pilling happens.

I have very oily skin as well and this has worked very well. If you're looking for something that will keep your skin matte for up to 8 or 9 hours (or more depending on how oily your skin is), this is a good product to try out.

I was also debating between MUFE and Tarte but since I saw that a lot of people complained about the white cast in photography, I decided to go with this and I've been satisfied so far. :)
