That depends on the results you want, your wallet and makeup or drawer space. ;) A (close to) matching purple LL will be a bit more dramatic, but if the purple LS is not long-wearing, you could end up with a purple outline, once the LS wears off. Matching a LL to your natural lip coloring is more versatile. (You can wear it with any other lip product, regardless of shade. Saves money, space and having to consider matching, when you switch lip product shades.)
With darker colors, it is best to get a close match to the lipstick shade. The reason is that you will line your lips, color in with lip liner, and apply the lipstick over it. Apply the lipstick with a brush, and fill in up to the liner edge. For more staying power, blot the lipstick and then color the liner over it once more (you can add a thin layer of lipstick on top of that for more 'umph!') :)

For dark lipsticks, match the liner to your lipstick and make sure to completely fill in the lips with the liner before applying the lipstick. For lighter colors, match to your lips.
Match your lipliner to the lip color of your choice.
