Shiseido softener is equivalent to a Toner after cleansing, it does the same thing but much softer on the skin, I'll never go back to any toner

I took this as meaning cleansing with your usual cleanser and mild exfoliation to soften so that the serum sinks in totally. Hope this helps!
I usually wait 10 minutes after applying serum to apply moisturizer.

Toners and softeners are both used between cleansing and moisturizing, but are a little different:

- Toners are part of the cleansing process, getting rid of excess dirt etc.
- Softeners are part of the moisturizing process, helping open up your pores and soften your skin to enhance the effectiveness of moisturizers.

Shiseido has a whole line of facial softeners, so that's probably why the mention "softener" specifically. It's like saying, "goes best with our other products!"

30ml is in the bottle. A little goes a long way.You don't have to use much, just 2 pumps of the bottle per application. Rub it in circular motions over your entire face and neck area. Use after cleansing and toning and before moisturizer or other facial creams.

I've been using it at night when I'm taking an evening off from retin-a and I use it alone... it's soooo concentrated and thick, but in a really good way. The first time I tried it, I kept waiting for the serum to fully absorb to apply moisturizer, but it left this uber soft 'film' (that sounds bad but it wasn't) that kept my skin feeling very well hydrated. I figured why bother applying anything else... again, I use it every few nights so I don't know what I would do were I using it in the day time.

I believe this goes on BEFORE any moisturizer or other face cream. I usually wash with cleanser, exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week, appy serum, wait 10 minutes then apply moisturizer or other face creams.

I don't know about this specific serum, but typically you cleanse, tone, and then layer your serums, then moisturize. I received that advice from a Clinique specialist and I've also read that with other serum usage instructions.

I put the serum on first, then my moisturizer. I also only use this at night due to the $$, & I tend to have oily skin, so I put less product on my face during the day. When applying you skin care products, you want to apply the most "important" product first (after toning of course), then follow with your moisturizer. This allows for optimal absorption of your products & therefore, best results from your products.

I think it means after washing with warm water. Washing opens the pores and softens the skin, so you want to put this on before your skin dries and your pores close.

I am helping someone over age 55 find an effective corrective skin care product, and her doctor has informed her that she cannot use any facial products that contain alcohol. We've found that this eliminates most of the highest rated products, including Clinique, Murad, and Ole Henriksen. Is Shiseido an option? If not, what would you recommend? Thanks!

It doesn't list alcohol as an ingredient. It does say that Shiseido Bio-performance Super Corrective Serum has designed its formula around a Bio-Corrective Complex of Super Bio-Yeast extract and safflower extract. These agents are designed to increase collagen and elastin production.
Not all ingredients are listed...
The only other ingredients named are rose apple lead extract, Super Bio-Hyaluronic Acid, and Super Plant Bio-Exfoliant. These ingredients provide moisture, antioxidants, and resurfacing. Without all the ingredients listed this is all the info I could provide. Hope it helps!

A quick amendment to my answer below:
I thought I was answering the 'what are the ingredients' question' but this should help anyway... this has Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH, PVA, or PVAl) and according to Wikipedia, is a water-soluble synthetic polymer, has excellent film forming, emulsifying and adhesive properties. It is also resistant to oil, grease and solvents. It is odorless and nontoxic. It seems to be found in most types of eye drops, so I can't imagine it's much of an irritant. I have super sensitive skin (rosacea, etc.) and, unlike many other products, it feels like a soothing balm on my face. Hope this helps!

This serum has done nothing for my dark spots / uneven skin tone. I would recommend a serum that focuses on brightening, such as Clinique's dark spot corrector or the Shiseido White Lucent line.

I found it lightened dark spots and over all evened out my complexion more. Seems brighter as well. I attributed it to the faster turnover of cells and smoothing as the skin acclimates to use. It's a keeper!
