it is a sunscreen, so it does not replace a moisturizer. However, no harm will happen if you use this instead of a moisturizer during the day esp if you have oily skin. Also, the new formula (they changed it last spring) has a lot more moisturizing power than their old formula.

This version is not at all moisturizing. It's truly just SPF, which is probably great for oily skin. Go with the PA +++ one if you have dry skin and are looking for more moisture.

Yes, when I went to Sephora the woman told me a moisturizer should be used first, then the sunscreen over it. On it's own I don't think it moisturizes too well.

I have oily/combination skin and live in Las Vegas (very dry climate) so I used Boscia's Daily Hydration underneath. This Shiseido product is a sunblock only, not a moisturizer, but it has a very watery consistency so you might have to try it with and without moisturizer for your particular skin type and climate.

A light lotion or gel cream should be applied to your skin before the sunblock. This is a liquidy sunscreen so you only apply a thin layer, which will not be enough to keep your skin hydrated. Best to use a day cream without SPF because my existing day cream with SPF 15 caused some residue when used with this product.

It is not a moisturizer on its own so you need to find the appropriate moisturizer first and then once that absorbs, use this sunscreen. At least that's what I like to do because I need a moisturizer that's more hydrating and sunscreen isn't so good at that.

I dont have oily skin, but my sister does and uses this everyday. it's very lightweight. at first when you put it on, it may feel greasy, but you need a few minutes for it set on your face. it's lightweight. Plus, the active sunscreen ingredients are physical blockers which are less likely to clog pores and better for sensitive skin that chemical blockers (aveobenzne)

Yes, I have sensitive and acne prone skin and this sunscreen hasn't irritated my skin at all. I've used plenty of other sunscreens out there and this is just by far the best.

I have oily skin and used to have severe cystic acne as a teenager, now just an occasional pimple as an adult, and this did not aggravate my sensitive skin.

Yes. This is a very light sunscreen. I tried it with the Philosphy Clear Day moisturizer ($23) which is a matte moisturizer that controls shine on your face. This combination will give you a little glow on your face, not exactly oily.

I'm guessing this is the American version of Canada's SPF 33 because it has the same shaped bottle and it's also a lotion for face and body. Yes it would be good for oily/acne skin but I'd try a sample first over your gel moisturizer or whatever you use as hydrator. Lotion textures are good for oily/acne prone skin. You want to avoid anything too heavy and stick to oil-free formulas.

I am also prone to breakouts, and I have been using this for some time, with no problems whatsoever. I use to not use sunscreens because they would cause breakouts, but not this one. I highly recommend it, it is a bit watery, but it absorbs so nicely, and it is not oily at all.

Not sure what the "inactives" are but I can tell you that this is the only sunscreen that has not given my very, very sensitive skin a problem. Most sunscreens irritate my skin but this one has been fine. I will say that if you have dry skin too, try the one with the PA +++ as it is moisturizing as well.

I think this is perfect for oily skin, because it's really designed for summer when people are sweating. Depending on how oily you are, you might still need a mattifying base and/or powder, but I find it very balancing and able to prevent some of the oily breakthrough. Also you could try the cream version because it's a little drier.

What does PA++ mean?

SPF measures a sunscreen's sun protection factor against UVB rays, which cause skin to burn. PA is the same concept, but it measures the sun protection factor against UVA rays, which cause skin aging. I never buy a sunscreen that doesn't give me a PA as well as SPF, because I want to protect my skin from aging as well as burning. There are 3 degrees of PA which are PA+, PA++, and PA+++. Since I use this as an everyday sunscreen, I think PA++ is more than enough, but if I were going to go surfing or something I'd either reapply it often or get PA+++. Hope that helps!

answer 2
PA stands for Protection grade of UVA.

PA+ protects sensitive skin against low to medium UV radiation
PA++ offers better protection from UVA rays and can be used by people with normal skin exposed to medium UV radiation
PA+++ is the strongest grade of UVA protection now available. It is designed for normal skin under very strong or direct UV radiation.

PA stands for Photoaging and the "+" stands for level.... + is the lowest and +++ is the highest. so PA +++ is the highest level of photoaging (both UVA and UVB) protection

answer 4
hi jorn, when you see "PA" followed by any number of + symbols that is the Japanese standard of rating uv-A ray protection. the more "+" symbols the higher/better the protection...remember, your uv "a" is your aging(wrinkling, etc) rays, "b" is burning. to my understanding from reading on the internet, this method of protection rating was developed because the standard "spf" rating measures only protection from uv-b, you have to read your ingredients to make sure you're getting broad-spectrum protection.

that being said, mineral sun protection ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are broad spectrum protection(and my preferred protection ingredients) as well they are used by shiseido. so long story short, the PA++ tells you you are getting pretty good uv a protection! sorry for the whole lecture!

You can definitely use this sunscreen under makeup with no worries! I've never had any issues with my makeup pilling or clumping in any way. For the past 8 years I have used it as my primer, right before I apply my makeup. However, I found that if I first apply a moisturizer, then the sunscreen, my makeup holds better. Hope this helps!

Question
Do you use this underneath or over your moisturizer?
I use the one with SPF 50 and I have gotten contradicting advice from the ladies at Sephora. One employee said I should apply it first and later follow with moisturizer because of the ingredients in this specific sunblock, while another employee told me it must go on top of my moisturizer. Which way should it be applied?
