This is a regular pencil that needs to be sharpened.
I know these type of liners usually have a different looking case around them(which keeps them softer longer)
And that is why most do not know how to sharpen them and therefore they gives these type of pencils a bad review :(
But,since the formula is very soft they really need to have extra extra sharp blades.... like the one from Urban Decay or the somewhat cheaper dupe from NYX.
I love my U.D. sharpener. It will definitely give you a sharp point fast......and for me it only takes 2-3 full turns(UD's blades are so sharp and smooth that you will notice the difference if how it just glides immediately and you will not lose half of the pencil to the sharpener anymore! :)

At first, I too didn't think that there could be a difference between sharpeners....but I can truly say that my soft waterproof pencils now last so much longer....so I promise ya there really is a difference! ;)
Hope this helps!

Use a sharpener. For kohl liners like this I like to put them in the refrigerator or freezer before sharpening them because they are so soft. When they are hardened/cold, they sharpen really well and don't break.

I have to use medication drops in my eyes several times a day and this causes regular eye makeups to run or disappear.I've been buying & testing various eyeliners that claim to be long-lasting or waterproof. So far the liquid waterproof liners last the longest but I don't like their rigid line so if you also add a gel liner on top you get a better look and it lasts all day.

One thing that helps is applying a skin tone powder like concealer or foundation under your eye to give the liner a primer and something to hold on to. Also I believe Benfit has a product called She-lac made to keep makeup in place you could test that during your next Sephora visit.

And if all else fails try applying below the lashes, but again I have not had that issue since purchasing this eyeliner.

Hey,
I have actually been wondering the same questions for a life time & have tried SEVERAL brands.
I would not recommend this eyeliner for the waterline, just because it's a kohl. However you could try the one i'm currently also using- The Urban Decay, 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil on the waterline. It will NOT stay for a LONGLONG time, but it does do its job.

If you really don't like this one, another one i've been happy with was this one- The Make Up Forever, Aqua Eyes liner. This works like a charm, but it's a very similar formula to the Urban Decay one.

They both will stay on the water line for about 2-3 hours, before the ends start to fade, but usually if you get a thick enough coat- it will last for about 5-6 hours.

I've posted the links to both & I hope you found this helpful.

Once you've lined your lid, drag the smudge tip over the line, sweeping/ pulling gently upwards (or downwards on the lower lid), to create a smokier line. It stops the line from being so distinct and is a great start to full on smokey eyes, especially with the Flashy Black liner or the brown. A small eyeliner brush will do the same job, and is a little easier to handle because the bristles are flat. Sometimes the smudge tip can be a little clumsy, but if you're going to add some smokey shadow to the look, it's great.

first of all, the guy working there explained to me that 'kohl' means you can apply the eyeliner underneath your lashes (close to your eye).

also, the eyeliner starts drying about a minute after you apply. so you do want to smudge it as soon as you apply.

Kohl pencils are supposed to be easy to apply around eye skin without scratching/scrubbing/damaging the under eye skin or eyelid. They usually are for creating dramatic effect so if you want a neat light application under the eye then kohl eyeliner is not for you - because it will appear heavier after application.

As for how to use it - you apply it like you would any other liner. Or you can watch a how-to video on YouTube!

It glides on really smooth with no tugging of on the lid. Because it's waterproof, you only have seconds before it sets. I recommend doing (lining then smudging) one eye at a time if you are going to smudge it. Otherwise even if it takes only seconds for you line each eye the other is too dry to smudge. To smudge just drag the smudge tip applicator over the line you just made. I start with inside and go towards the outer corner so that the smudge is heavier there.

If you want to open up your eyes and make them look more cat-like, you can put it on the upper waterline as close to the inner eye as possible, but you should put it on the upper lashline only about 3/4 of the way. I learned this tip from a makeup professional at a major broadcast network. It makes the eyeliner look heavier on the outside so it enhances the cat-eye look. I always put it on my lower waterline about 3/4 of the way too, otherwise the eyeliner (especially kohl) looks too raccoon-ish.

With the pencil you can sharpen it and get a fine point which gives you a fine line (something you can't do with a retractable liner). Other than that I haven't noticed a difference in the formula. I haven't used the retractable, but the kohl is quite soft compared to other brands of retractable eyeliners I've used before. This isn't a negative, just a difference. I find that because of the softness of the liner, it's easier to use a brush to apply. Just run a liner brush over the tip, like you were painting it, and use that to apply to the lid. It stops the liner from depositing too much and really extends the life of the liner because you don't have to sharpen it very often. I love this eyeliner. It's waterproof-ness is unbeatable, and I love that it's soft enough to smudge around before it sets.

I love this one more because the retractable tends to snap off when I apply it too quickly. This pencil is sturdy and can be applied thinly or thickly.

I would say tha main difference is that this one is a "pencil" liner. It needs to be sharpened occasioanlly but it goes on smoothly like a retractable liner does. I find it easier to use penicls because it gives me a finer, more controlled line. That's just my preference though. :) Good Luck!

Yes, you can. I do all the time...but go VERY slow when applying it...since this eyeliner is creamy it tends to apply TOO MUCH when you do it quickly. Hope this helps :)

I may sound a little ignorant, but is your water line the inside of your lid? If so, then yes! I found this eyeliner is perfect for lining the inside of your lid! With other liners, I tend to get little dots of liner on the outside of my lid throughout the day, but I don't get that with this liner!

You can, but it would fade because is not that waterproof. Now if you apply a tiny amount of the same eye shadow primer you put on your lids you may get better results.

Absolutely! I've been using mine in my water line and it doesn't burn my eyes what-so-ever! It also lasts all day on the water line, where most liners fade and run down with in an hour.
The color stays intense and in place all day!

Question
sharpening the pencil?
This is the 2nd Kohl Waterproof eye pencil I have owned and find it very hard to sharpen. I end up wasting a lot of it trying to get it sharpened. I am using a regular sharpener I bought from Sephora. I asked the sales associate at Sephora if I needed a different type of sharpener and she told me I could use any sharpener. Is there a certain way to sharpen it?? Am I doing something wrong?

I, too, have had a lot of problems with this.
It's not a perfect trick, but I find that sometimes, if I pop it in the freezer for a minute or two, it will be a better consistency to sharpen.
Hope that helps!

I think my sharpener was from a Lancome product I bought years ago. I use that BUT I sharpen it very slowly so as not to waste anything or break the tip off. I don't know if that helps you.

since the pencil is really soft, I put it in the freezer for a few hours and then sharpen it in order to get a fine point and to avoid breakage/waste. The only issue with this method is timing it so you sharpen it before you actually need it.

don't press the pencil down firmly into the sharpener. i just use a regular sharpener i've had for years, you don't need anything special to do the trick!

I have used a standard manual pencil sharpener to sharpen and have not had problems having to use much of the pencil to sharpen. I do use a sharperner that I picked up from an art store that allows me to pick a sharpening size that is most appropriate to the pencil width. I find that it sharpens pretty well that way.

I have the NARS sharpener and it works like a charm. It was only $6 and I have probably saved at least that much by sharpening everything properly instead of wasting product.

i tried using a normal makeup pencil sharpener for this & it didn't work well because this is a really soft, creamy liner. i hear the urban decay grind house sharpener was good for creamy liners (the urban decay 24/7 liners are creamy as well) and so i bought that and tried it out with this pencil . it worked, & sharpened this creamy pencil really well. i would recomend getting the UD grind house sharpener! but, it is pretty pricey for a sharpener ($10!) but i have some UD liners too, so it's handy for me.
i can't really say about other sharpeners though, because that's the only one i've tried (from sephora).
hope this helped!

I'm using a sharpener that does not sell at Sephora it is for eye liner, has two different size holes and I use the small one. But I have to say that this particular eye liner doesn't last too long, not like the Makeup 4ever one, but is smooth and doesn't feel sticky.
