I use the Laura Mercier brushes, but I'm sure you can use similar ones of another brand. For simple lining, use the "Flat Eyeliner Brush". You have to wet it slightly and load it up with the color (you can't just dab it in the caviar - you have to like run the brush through it). If you want a smokey look, use the "Smokey Eye Liner Brush." You can, but don't have to, wet the brush (if you do, not too much), and really smush it into the color before applying.

Hi there :) I personally like the Laura Mercier smudge point brush. It goes on super easily, dampen it a bit for deeper color payoff. Fot a more straigt line use the flat eyeliner brush the Laura Mercier has. Have fun!

That was a problem, wasn't it? Mercier could help by putting in a small brush! I used my boyfriend's small paint brush until I could find a smaller one in my "essentials" box. And Mercier could also help by selling a box to carry two of the eyeliners AND a brush.

Use any stiff bristled flat lining brush. My favorite is Smashbox creme liner applicator brush. See it at: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P36210&categoryId=B70

It is perfect for this. Other brushes *may* be too flexible and not allow enough product on the brush to sufficiently apply.

What you need to apply this product is a brush that is perfectly flat on the top. And level. A slanted angle brush, eg, will not work well. You get the brush damp or apply at most one drop of water to the eye liner cake. Swipe the brush back and fourth across the cake until the consistency of the cake is mostly dry again. Then you want ro gently lift up the underside of your lid. Lightly place the end of your loaded brush at the root of your eye lashes, not the upper water line. The whole point is to give the appearance of a fuller lash line and the effect is subtle yet gorgeous. Enjoy!

for those who posted that you get Caviar eye liner wet, you are wrong. they are talking about the cake like eye liner that comes in a similar container. the best way to apply this product is to use the Laura Mercier Smokey eye liner brush. why sephora doesn't sell it is has me very lost, that brush and the caviar eye liner go hand and hand. yes, you could use a flat eye liner brush if you want but the best way to get that smokey look is a brush that comes to a soft point. (If anyone at sephora reads this post, can you tell whom has the buying power to add that brush to your list of products)

It can, yes, but the point of it is ro be applied to the roots of the eyelashes to make them appear fuller. Applying to the waterline is fine, but I imagine the product will wear off quickly. I would suggest a pencil liner instead.

Yes, you can wear it under the lash line and just like regular eyeliner. I do prefer Sephora's waterproof kohl pencils for underneath the eye. They are more dramatic and really long wearing.

I actually used a sponge tip applicator and it worked well enough when I was already running late for work. But, I touched up a bit more after getting to work (Always keep a supply of makeup and tools at work) using a liner brush.

This product is a great liner. I use a flat, stiff brush...the bristles are approximately shy of 1/2 inch long and they lay side by side less than 1/2 inch long.

The trick is getting a brush with stiff bristles. If you pick one up that is not stiff enough, the bristles will bend on the surface of the product in the container and you wont have any to apply:

1. Take the brush and stamp it down gently (not on the sides of the bristles) on the product. Think of tapping out a cigarette. If the product is sitting on the counter, the brush should be completely straight up and down. If you need to you can come back and add more product to the brush by keeping the brush straight up and down but this time swiping it over the surface.

2. Keeping the brush head flat, start in the middle of your lid, and while pulling your lid taught with a finger from your other hand, keep the brush as close to your lash line as possible while 'stamping' the liner on your lid. The width of the brush head is the advantage here because it covers more surface. After drawing the product out to the corner (or beyond), re apply product to brush if needed, and starting at mid-lid, begin to draw to inner corner while tapering off and making the line thinner as you get closer to the inner corner. This adds a pretty contour to the shape of your eye.

Wipe the brush with a tissue to remove unused liner.
Use a qtip and smudge liner, if desired, for a smoky look.

Question
How does this differ from the cake liner?
In many if the reviews I've read, this product is being mixed with water to create a more defined line. how is this different from the cake eyeliner? How do the textures, ease of use, and finished look compare?

When you apply it, it actually "glides" on. I have never used an eyeliner this good and I've been using cake eyeliner for many, many years. It lasts all day and looks like you just applied it 12 hours later. I can apply it in the morning and go out after work and it still looks great! I am totally impressed with this product.

To me, when it's applied w/ a slightly damp brush the line is a bit smoother and color a bit muted. Matter of visual preference, I think.

Question
staying power
I've tried Laura mercier caviar eye stick shadows and love the staying power and that they do not irritate my sensative eyes. Does the caviar liner have a comperable staying power? And do I need to use water to mix it into a paste? Thanks!
