The brush is made of badger hair (which according to my husband is the best type of hair for a shaving brush). You use the brush to apply the shaving cream. He says that the brush helps lift the hairs and allows for a much closer shave.

and the reason there is a shave brush and shave cream is because most nicer shaving creams require a brush. they dont technically require a brush, but they are easiest to create a nice lather. this shaving cream is not like the kind you buy from walmart. it doesnt come out all foamy or gunky.
you actually put an almond size amount into a shaving bowl. wet your brush, and then whirl around the brush in the shaving cream to create a nice lather. that is when it actually looks like the common shaving cream we see today.

For the most part, nearly all shave brushes are composed of badger hair. there are three or four different qualities of badger hair used.
there is pure badger, best badger, super badger, and silvertip badger. ranging from bottom to top respectively.
This is more than likely pure badger simply because of the price. silvertip and the higher end models cost more than 150$ a piece.
they are used because they offer a high moisture carrying capacity allowing for a nicer lather and even dispersal of shaving cream. they also raise the hairs as stated.

The bristles on the brush are made from pure badger hair. Just a heads up--the bristles stink!! The reason for the brush is it softens and lifts the beard resulting in an extremely close shave. That was the first comment my boyfriend made after using this kit. It will also gently exfoliate the skin, reducing the chances of getting an ingrown hair.
