Questions & Answers for Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box

Question
what primer should i use to make the shadows more vibrant?
I have fair to medium fair skin and i was disappointed that the shadows weren't as vibrant as i had expected them to be even when i used the primer potion that is included. Is there any primers that would help to make the shades more intense and vibrant?

I have 8 different brands of eyeshadow primer, and I tend to use a mix of three primers on my eyelids, depending on what look I'm going for that day. Typical colored smoky eye....I use Kat Von D primers in Skin (over most of the eyelid) and Smoky (towards the outer portion of the eyelid) and the Urban Decay classic primer by my browbone (for the highlighter shadow.) Kat's primers are excellent, and out of the 8 different brands of primers I have/use hers are becoming my favorites. They keep the colors true and vibrant for 16+ hours, and the Smoky primer really keeps the dark colors beautiful without making them all just look black.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance is quite a good one that you might want to look into. It has a creamier texture than UD's primer. The price, however, is quite close to the cost of a UD primer.

Make sure you use the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer. Then follow with NYC Milk pencil for a white base then follow with whichever eyeshadow you want. It will really make the colors vibrant.

Being that you are of fair complexion, I am surprised that these colors were not vibrant enough for you. The primer that comes with this palette is to keep the colors from creasing and to give you longer staying power. If you apply foundation on your eyes use the primer over the foundation. Then follow with a white base such as NYC Jumbo Eyepencil in Milk over your entire lid. This white base will allow the colors to show up "as is" So if you are looking for intense, vibrant colors that's what you'll get. Becareful not to over do it and end up looking like a parrot. Hope this works for you. I am of olive complexion and these colors do not show up on me UNLESS I apply the white base.

I have fair/light colored skin too and I've tried a few different primers, like the UD eyeshadow primer and also one from KvD. The primer from UD felt too light and KvD felt too thick, but the one I really like that has always worked for me and was not too heavy but still creamy and soft was the Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Maybe give that one a try, if you haven't yet, and hopefully it'll work for you like it has for me. :)

I use Stay Don't Stray by Benefit. I used to use the eyeshadow potion, but it doesn't have the staying power I need.

Also, Stay don't stray helps brighten your eyelid for more punchy color.

If that is still not enough, try dampening the sponges it comes with and apply the color that way.

Yes some of the colors are glittery and If you apply it either put the eye color on first before any face make up or us a tissue or cloth under the eye to catch any color that may fall on to the face so the color or glitter does not get on the rest of the face. It can be very hard to erase or clean if other face makeup has already been applied. The colors really open up the eyes for a fresh and bright face. great product and colors.

Question
Can I create subtle looks with Deluxe for work and every day wear?
I am new to UD. I was going to get Ammo, which is more suitable for creating every day work looks, but I was thrown off by the amount of glitter that ends up in your face. I know deluxe is non-glittery but then the colors are very bright. I was wondering whether I would be able to create every day neutral, for work looks with this palette. Can you make these colors subtle? If not, is there any other eyeshadow palette (UD or non-UD) you would recommend for me? I have brown eyes and light-to-medium skin.

Definitely. While these colors are very vibrant, they're blendable and buildable. To get the intense vibrant effect, you need to put a good amount on. The blue one and the violet purple one don't need a lot to make them pop but you can certainly blend them with, for example, the 3 natural colors on the bottom. This is the best set. I got it specifically so I could wear it to work and out at night.

For a fun yet clam and pretty look I used Honey in the inner corners, adding a bit of water to my brush to up the color, and Peace on the lid. Ofcorse blending the to colors togeather too! Also for the brow bone/ highlight I used Vanilla from Smashbox's Softbox Eye Palellet. This shadow isn't ofcorse in this pallette, but you can buy this at Sephora, or simply leave it out, or use a white eyeshadow. Even Tho I'm using more colorful shadows, this looks isnt so crazy, and looks very pretty, uniek, and fun at the same time! Just remember,, you can pull almost every look off, and who's stopping you? Have fun with your shadows! Also Fishnet and Shag make a good combo for a simple look. :D

At times I would wear Underground all over my lid for weeks! It's a great subtle color that can be played up with the other colors if desired. The three neutrals in this palette are very versatile and work-appropriat, but the fun and vibrant colors are perfect to transform it from business to play.

The shadows are really highly pigmented, but sometimes I use an angle brush to use the bright colors as liner on my lower lid for a fun pop of color. I also dull the color down on my lids by layering an earth tone or light shadow over the top of a strong color.

If you use primer give it a minute or two to dry before applying color to encourage a less dramatic color.

Though these colors aren't the most subtle, I do indeed wear them to work! I am a bit of a glam girl but never overdo it. And you must be too because if you're drawn to this palette that says you are! THe colors are silky and stay put, very rich and jewel-like. I never really gave a *** about eyeshadow til I discovered this particular line...deluxe. Much more subtle but beautiful is the glamour-to-go set...forget who makes it.It's a retro-looking line.

I would go for the Deluxe box because there are enough shadows to play around with without feeling like you have a bunch of leftover ones that are similar or not your type--that's the problem with the big palettes. I really like this palette because they're vibrant colors but they're completely blendable and buildable. You could wear them bright or blend them into a natural color so that they add just a little bit of vibrancy. I highly recommend this set over the BoS III (which I'm not sure is still available?)

The Deluxe Eyeshadow Box have many vibrant colors and tend to be challenging to combine. If you own the UD Naked palette and are looking for vibrant colors to give your neutral look a little pop then this palette may work for you. I tend to use neutral shades but I am looking forward to using the Deluxe palette to add a "LITTLE" color to my look when I sport my summer sundresses. If you have olive skin I suggest using a white base like NYC Jumbo Eyepencil in "Milk" on top of your eyeprimer to maintain the vibrancy of the eyeshadow. Otherwise, the color may appear extremely dull. Try going to YouTube and punching in "Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow Box" in the search box for application/combination of these eyeshadow. Again, challenging colors to work with. Certainly NOT one of my favorite UD palettes.

To be honest, if you're new to UD, I'd start out with the Ammo palette. The Deluxe Shadow Box has very bright colors. Only three neutrals in here, albeit very pretty neutrals. And the Book of Shadows Vol II has a lot of color in it as well. Lots of purples, pinks, and greens. Plus it has 16 shadows in there. And it's huge. There's a lot of unused color potential in both of these palettes.

I love applying wet shadows on top of dry shadows, which is the perfect day-to-evening trick to turn a natural eye into a smokey or dramatic one! If you're traveling, this is a great palette to take with you!

I own ammo and I think it's GREAT! I was new to Urban Decay as well and I didn't want to walk around looking like a clown. It is a GREAT eye shadow palette with great neutrals and a few "poppers". My only gripe is that a few of the shadows are more "glitter" than shimmer. So without (and some times with) the primer, it get glitter all over my face.

That being said, I plan on ordering the Deluxe Shadows/Shadow box to expanded and give some variety to my cadre.

Neutral look: Scratch on inside lid, Shag on outside lid and as a highlight, Underground in crease. (also works well without shag - not a great color for my skintone)

Fun and easy day looks: Scratch over the whole eye, line top lashes with 24/7 liner in Zero (or Zero from the palette if you dont' have it), and use a smudge brush over the liner with any of the brighter colors in the palette.

Dramatic look: Scratch over Fishnet on lid, Ransom in crease, Scratch to highlight, line top lashes with Ransom 24/7 liner (or Ransom from the palette if you don't have it) and use a smudge brush over the liner with Fishnet, line with Fishnet on bottom lash line.

Tips for Scratch: always makes a good highlight on the brow, works as a decent eye brightener on the inner corner/lower lash line if you don't have one, can be layered on top of any of the brighter colors to tone down the intensity.

Tips for Zero: a small amount under the other colors works well in the crease, a thicker layer under the other colors acts as an intensifier.

They have all of these shades in the Urban Decay deluxe shadow collection!! You would have to depot the shadow though, but there are many videos and tutorials on how to do that. Once you have done that, you will need to take the current pan out of your pallete (also vids and tutorials for that) and replace it with the new one. You may also need to put some new glue in there. If you don't need it in the actual pallete, I would reccomend just keeping them in the packaging! It's sooo pretty!

PS: For youtube, look up "How to depot an Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow" and this one will come up!! its perfect but you don't have to do the magnent part at the end!!
