mat velvet as better fuller coverage than the hd foundation and it is pretty much heat and sweat proof. i wore it in las vegas on one of the hottest seasons, i wore it to pool parties and all sort of events and it really lasted, i was shocked because foundations tend to let me down. watch my video for further insight:

I own both versions and the Mat Velvet foundation offers slightly more coverage. The finishes are different; Mat Velvet has a natural matte finish while HD has a natural luminous finish. Both foundations are good for all skin types, but the HD version would be better for those with dry skin while the Mat Velvet is better for those with oily skin.

I've attached a before and after photo using both foundations so you can see the coverage it offered me. For both photos I applied my foundationg using a dense stippling brush (the e.l.f. Cosmetics Studio Powder Brush) using small circular motions to buff in the foundation. No primer. No setting powder.

Mat Velvet :-)

I have used both HD and Mat Velvet and Mat Velvet is more coverage. HD is a little dewier looking (a touch shinier) and although it has better coverage than most other foundations, Mat is better. Mat is also easier to dispense (you can do a tiny bit or a lot whereas with HD, you use a pump and it decides how much comes out). Mat has a great, waxy smell. Sounds weird but I love the smell. I use it to cover acne and redness and it does a great job without being cakey at all.

i have tried both the mat velvet and the HD. for me the HD was way to moisturizing for my combo/oily skin, but the mat velvet is perfect its my HG foundation :) im an nc 25-30 and use the #40 its a perfect match. hope this helps

Mat Velvet definately has more coverage. I have used both products. I love the way HD feels but it just does not cover up the redness from acne that the Mat Velvet does.

I think they are pretty close. but the hd made me break out really really bad. I still have scars on my face from when I was using it.

Hey! I was just at Sephora today testing both of these and I can confirm that Mat velvet definitely has the better coverage!

I am not sure yet. I have been using the velvet which I love, and just ordered the HD version so look for my review soon on that one!

I'm assuming you mean Bare Escentuals? I'm the shade medium beige and shade no. 35 in MUFE's Mat Velvet + foundation. I also have yellow undertones. Hope that helps.

I use the medium beige in BE (which may be a little dark for me in the winter) I am using the MAT Velvet+ for the winter in #40 I believe its Natural or Neutral Beige. It matches my skin perfectly. If the medium beige is too light for you you may want to go a shade lighter with this. Hope this helps!

Yes, it will withstand the heat. I spent hours at a bbq and my make up remained flawless.

It's the only foundation I've ever used that did not require a touch-up or powder during the day for my oily skin -- even during a hot, humid summer in the deep south!

Definitley. I live in South Florida, where it is extremely hot and humid. When I used to wear Bare Minerals and eat outside during lunch, or stay and talk outside after church, I would have to quickly run inside because it would look orange and my face would be very oily and greasy-looking.

With this, I was amazed when I went back inside and saw that I did not have to blot at all. And I have two hour lunches in the sun!

This foundation stood up to several hours of cooking in the intense heat of a restaurant's kitchen! I love it!

I come from the south where heat and humidity are in abundance. I find this to be a great "stay with you" foundation with out looking "fake". I love it.

40 has yellow undertones. Used best if your face is normally a little red looking it will cover it well with the yellow udnertone.

I am between these two shades and i really did not like 35. I felt pale but when i asked the sephora representative she said i looked great in that shade. The issue was that i just felt this stronge yellow complexion which i really did not like! so i love 40. It tons down. I like to look a little tan not yellowish/ pale

#35 looked darker than #40 when I swatched it in the store. But when I applied it all over my face, after it oxidized, the #40 looked way too dark and orangey for my NC25-30 skin while #35 was a perfect match.

i swatched both products on my hand (i am light/medium skin with yellow undertones) and 35 is DEFINITELY darker and more beige-y than 40. i bought the 40!

I'm a redhead who lives in a very warm/sunny climate year round, so my light skin tends to be on the darker side of the light spectrum. I have strong pink undertones and No 25 Warm Ivory is my perfect shade. Sadly ALL the HD light shades were too yellow on me but luckily I like mat velvet better. This makeup is wonderful but it isn't forgiving at all if the shade is off, so don't be afraid to return it if you have to.

It's possible I have a similar skin tone - light to medium with neutral to cool pink undertones. It's really hard to find a match, but I found that # 30 porcelain worked great!
I do recommend you go to Sephora for a match. When I became interested in this, I was tempted to order online and would have chosen # 40. When I went to Sephora, the young lady who was assisting me matched me with a shade that actually looked a little yellow when I walked outside in the natural light. She wasn't able to see this until she found # 30 and tried that on the other half of my face. I noticed right away how much better it looked on me and once she saw me side by side with the original shade she had selected, she was able to concede the # 30 worked better for me as well. The moral of the story ??? Don't be afraid to let your MA know if a foundation doesn't look right to you. You're the one who has to wear it all day! LOL...

Based on your concerns I suggest trying the No. 30 - Porcelain.

You don't NEED to use a primer with any foundation... however I recommend using a primer with foundation just because it does extend the wear of your makeup. I have worn this both with and without primer, and I always find my foundation wears longer and smoother with primer. The MUFE "All Mat" primer is great if you have oily skin.

I don't use a primer with this foundation. I, like the other review, do put on a bit of moisturizer to help it go on easier. I set it with a bit of powder after I put it on. Looks GREAT!

I don't use a primer, but I do use a tiny bit of moisturizer. This helps the found. to not go on as heavy and it makes it a lot easier to blend, you will also use less product!

I had the exact same problem. If you look under the bottle, you will see a number that starts with 370. The last 2 numbers are the shade number, mine was 37020, so 20 (Ivory).

on the bottom, theres a lot # usually the last 2 or 4 numbers (depending on the brand and how they identify shades) will give you the shade number. hope that helps.

I looked at the bottom of my bottle as well, and all it had was a lot number. Can you email Sephora and read off all of the numbers on the bottom?

Your best bet is to go into a Sephora store and either try some on your neck and jawline right then and there... OR get one of the beauty professionals to make you a sample of a few different shades so that you can see them on.

I think that the 35 is too light and the 60 is perfect, plus you can use less!

I am a medium skin tone and I normally get a buff biege or what not in other makeup and I got # 30 in this! Hope that helps!

Mat Velvet with the HD Finishing powder over it. After the MV has dried I really take a little HD on my finger and rub into the oily areas. Excellent at keeping the oil down.

Mat velet is the best for oily skin. I also have oily skin and this product is great.

I always keep my foundation in the box, which clearly states the shade # on the top of the box... however if you do not have the box, on the bottom of the bottle there is a reference #, the last 2 digits of that # is your shade #. For example, I use shade #30 for summer right now, and the last 2 #'s on my bottle are "30".

Your shade would be 45. The last 2 numbers on the bottom of the bottle is the shade #
