This cleanser works kind of like an exfoliation. So anything you have on your face such as makeup, etc. It cleans it off. Of course cosmetics such as mascara and eyeliner, you might want to take a small tissue and wipe the excess after you have washed your face. Other than, it's very gentle.

I use it to remove mineral powder foundation and sunscreen and it works pretty well. Be sure to wash for at least one minute. You may want to use it with a Clarisonic to make sure the waterproof sunscreen is not staying on. I use mine 3 times a week with this wash for exfoliation and get great results!

I can't really say if it's the same as buying off the shelf in just a regular store, but with that being said, sometimes off brand facial cleansers tend to have more artificial ingredients instead of the actual cleanser itself. Artificial cleansers tend to do more damage to the skin.
