Whereas the lotion provides your skin with both, moisture and lipids, the gel is oilfree. It gives your skin the moisture it needs, but it also helps reduce the oil production. This being said, make sure not to apply the gel around the eyes, where the skin is naturally dry.

A gel is lighter so oilier skinned people can use it. It can also be used as a moisture base for other moisturizers for normal-dry skins.

OIL-FREE! it may not seem like a big distinction but to those with even slightly oily skin, the oil-free aspect of this gel ensures that your face won't look like an oil slick by mid-morning, it also helps clear and prevent breakouts! wonder gel!

When I tried both the lotion and the gel at the Clinique makeup counter I was told that the lotion is best used for those who fall into the Clinique skin types 1 and 2, and the gel is best for types 3 and 4. In other words the lotion is best for those with dryer skin and the gel is best for combination or oily skin.

The gel is more lightweight than the lotion. In my opinion, the lotion would be suitable for winter weather, and the gel for summer weather. (:

With the lotion I was experiencing increased under the skin breakouts in the T-zone as I aged which surprised me. Clinique suggested the switch to the gel & the breakouts subsided. After a few months they disappeared never to return. That was three years ago. The cheeks improved in appearance & looked more moist than with the lotion.

I have the same problem oily t-zone and chin area but super dry on my cheeks and oddly inbetween my eyes. This stuff works great and gives me enough moisture with out being heavy or greasy. The nice thing to with sephora is if you don't like it after you try it you can always return it. If you havea sephora near by stop in and ask for a sample of the lotion to test it out.

No, it won't. This product is not a moisturizer to be used on its own. It fixes your skin's moisture barrier, so a moisturizer can penetrate your skin easily and stay in your skin all day long. Make sure to get a moisturizer for the day that has an SPF. If you use the 3Step system before (including DDMG) you need much less of your moisturizer and your skin will continue to feel smooth and well balanced despite the cold weather.

Yes, I've used in both cold (Michigan & Illinois) and warm climates (Texas & Nevada) and I really enjoy it. It's really a year round moisturizer, you don't have to switch to a heavy "cold cream" just because the temp drops!

I live in Minnesota where we get cold winters and harsh winds, too and since using this moisturizer I haven't noticed my skin drying out. If the amount of time you spend outside is minimal, I think you will be fine, especially if you have naturally oily skin. Unless your skin DOES tend to get noticeably drier in the winter, perhaps try switching to the Dramatically Different Moisurizing Lotion for the cooler season.

For normal skin you could use either the gel or the lotion, bith are great. You may perfer the gel for day and in the summer months and the lotion at night or in the winter when you feel like extra hydration may be needed. If you tend to get oily in your T-Zone, however, I would stick with the gel.

I think the gel might work better for you. I have combination skin (my T-zone is oily) and I find that the gel absorb quickly and does not leave me feeling greasy or shiny. I usually reserve the lotion for the cold winter months and use the gel during the rest of the year

I recently read an article that said that the moisturizing LOTION had an outdated ingredients list and they still put a lot of unecassary ingredients in the lotion like mineral oil, which is not a friend of the skin, that make it not a good choice for you. However they praised this gel and said it's one of the best on the market and has a very nice formulation to it. I have oily skin and this absorbs in almost immediately. I think it could be just fine for you're normal skin.

This would be perfect for you! During the day I wear this and sometimes a little Moisture Surge if my skin is extra dry in some places, and then wear my tinted moisturizer over top. It doesn't feel heavy or like you have too much on so it is great to layer. I have combo skin and it works wonders. I use it at night as well but you may need to add something on top depending on your skin care needs. But definitely try this!

High end companies don't want cheap brands like CVS knocking off their formula and selling it for $3 at a drugstore like everything else. They keep it exclusive so they don't have to compete with all the low end brands.

Yes. This works well with oily or combo skin, and is light. But if you are experiencing flakiness and dryness, the lotion may be better for those areas. I would recommend you go to a sephora store and ask for samples of this and the lotion and try them out for a few days before deciding.

Is this a main moisturizer or is it a primer? I'm looking to replace my current moisturizer because it does not make me oil free, I like my primer though. So what exactly is this? Can i still use my primer and get rid of my moisturizer? Apparently even people with oily skin need to moisturize.

i love the Hourglass Mineral primer to go along with my powder mineral foundation =) If you have acne prone skin, i suggest not to use thick or any kind of liquid foundation because its not good for your pores! even if it is oil-free or not. I know powder mineral foundation doesn't cover 100% but i swear, no one will notice if you don't have everything covered. This primer and the powder mineral foundation will look very natural and beautiful! =) Y

This is not a primer, but the perfect moisturizer for oily skin. Oilies really need to moisturize so our glands don't go into overdrive. You can put primer on top of moisturizers, it locks the product in. I have oily skin as well and that's what I do to prep my skin for makeup.

This is a main moisturizer. It is important for people with oily skin to moisturize for oil-control actually. This moisturizer is very light and disappears into the skin. It also provides exceptional oil control for me. It does not work as a foundation primer, but I wear my foundation right over this moisturizer (and sunscreen) and my foundation does not lose it's staying power. This is a plus since layering makeup in the heat causes it to sweat more.

This is a moisturizer for people with oily skin, It is a gel based and easily absorbed into the skin. It does not leave a oily mess behind. My advice is to try the moisturizer and see if you still need the primer at all, but you can use them together if needed.

Yes, people with oily skin do still need to moisturize because if you don't, your skin will produce even more oil which can cause you to break out. As far as I know, this product is a moisturizer and I'm sure you can still use it with your primer. Personally, I don't use a primer. What I do is I put this moisturizer on and apply my foundation on right after. It makes my foundation blend like a dream! But, with any moisturizer, you should wait for it to soak it before using a primer. I hope this helped. Good luck!

I use it as an oil-free moisturizer. It's very light and absorbs quickly into the skin. While it helps control oil a little, it's not meant to be a primer. I use a separate product for that. I've tried several different types of primer after using this gel, and they all worked fine. Hope this helps! :)
